Microsoft is scheduled to make a big announcement today in this regard.  They will be making Softricity part of a bundle of software that should make our IT lives much easier.

I think Eileen has a great idea, this was something I had mentioned to someone just yesterday.  But it would require that at least 50% of testers actually installed instead of virtualized it.  But you could virtualize it to see how it impacted your system before you installed.

A new Beta experience for applications

I heard an absolutely brilliant suggestion the other week. One that would take us a couple of years to deliver on, and would require a heck of a lot of co-ordination between all of the product groups, but ever since I heard about this, it's been kicking around in my head. I just have to share it and things moving somehow.

I was with the UK MVP's at a recent event in the UK. They were firing questions at our new General Manager, Gordon Frazer. One of the MVP's suggested that in future, we delivered all of our beta products using Softgrid from Softricity which we recently acquired.

What a fabulous idea.

Think about it. You could download the package "bubble" containing the beta code, run it alongside of your existing applications without impacting your applications or operating system at all. When the beta expires, then you just delete the packaged "bubble" from your system with no effects at all. Of course there'll be lots of instances where we'd also need to have beta testers who test beta applications to gauge impact on other applications, hardware etc, but for a truly safe beta experience, then Softgrid has got to be it. Sure there'll be cases where this can't be done. Softgrid virtualises applications, not operating systems, but hey, just think of all of the stuff that CAN be virtualised. The possibilities are really amazing

So spread the word far and wide. Link to this post so that the product team guys (who read blogs) recognise that you think that this is a great idea too. Badger your contacts at Microsoft to offer this option across the application suites for Betas and get everyone working together and delivering a really seamless beta experience for applications for everyone in the future.

...and lets get this snowball rolling...
