The Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Device Management Feature Pack is an add-on feature to SMS 2003 that enables device discovery and management. The Feature Pack provides SMS administrators with the following SMS features and capabilities when using devices running Microsoft Windows CE and Windows Mobile software for Pocket PC operating systems:
· Hardware inventory
· Software inventory
· File collection
· Software distribution
· Device settings management
· Password policy enforcement
Installation of the Device Management Feature Pack does not change existing SMS 2003 functionality. The Feature Pack adds new functionality, modifies the SMS site, and makes some changes to the SMS Administrator console. Specifically, the Feature Pack:
· Adds a Device Client Agent under Client Agents.
· Adds a Distribute Software to Devices wizard to support software distribution to devices.
· Modifies the Management Point tab on the Site System Properties page with an option to Use this site system as a device management point.
· Adds five new collections for devices: All Windows Mobile Devices, All Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2002 Devices, All Windows Mobile Pocket PC 2003 Devices, All Windows Mobile Pocket PC 5.0 Devices, and All Desktops and Servers.
· Adds the Device Settings Manager component under Tools. It creates .cab files that can be used with the Distribute Software to Devices Wizard to distribute configuration settings to devices such as network, password and security settings. Installation of this component is an option in the Device Management Feature Pack Setup wizard.
· Includes a device management component in SMS status summarizers.
· Adds device-specific configuration property pages for advertisements and programs.
· Reports hardware inventory details of ActiveSync-connected devices as part of SMS 2003 computer hardware inventory.
· Reports the ActiveSync version on the desktop client as part of SMS 2003 computer hardware inventory.
