This Dell 2950 is Smoking Fast!!!
A few months ago I posted an article on how Intel was poised to take the lead back in the speed race. What I didn’t mention was I had been briefed by Intel a few months before and they laid down so very heavy claims, percentages were mentioned that you don’t hear often from a vendor, claims were made that cause you to do a double take at their Power Point slide.
Dell was also in on this meeting and our AE offered me a loaner server to test. Well it came several weeks back but I was in the middle of getting ready for our largest conference and did not have time to really do anything with it. But since I got back I have been slowly installing it and about a week ago I finally got it up with SQL 2005 and SMS v4 (SCCM 2007).
Let me get to my point though, we all have this wonderful dream that when we finally get a new computer it will be like night and day, all those annoying things that used to take forever will be instantaneous, we click and it opens, we drag and it moves, we click Restart, and it restarts…then. But much to our dismay it is almost always a letdown, yes it’s faster, but not what we had hoped. And because of our field if you are like me you usually get to feel this pain more often than the average bear. But, every once and a while it HAPPENS. And when it does you get the rush of blood to your face a smile appears that even the BOFH understands, and you click faster to see if you can break it, and it just keeps going along, you push and you push and you push and it doesn’t seem to care, it laughs at you and says “Is that all you got?!” And that feeling of joy rushes through you, it really is like night and day, it opens that app as soon as you click it, it doesn’t prepare to copy, it just copies! And you are in awe.
Ladies and Gentlemen – Welcome to the new Intel processor world.

To give you a frame or reference I have v4 installed on a 2850 that is a year old and I wait for it to switch from one task to another, when I launch v4 I get this MMC dialog box I have never seen before, this box is a dual 2.8 GHz CPU server with 2GB of RAM so it is not an old POS, it was literally my SMS server a year ago for the aforementioned conference and it worked great. But I finish typing emails waiting for v4 to finish switching from one node to the next.

AMD has had their foot on Intel’s neck for quite sometime now and now it looks as if Intel may actually make it up on their feet again and even land a few punches in the processor battle. I sat in on a roadmap from Intel a few months back and without getting into NDA/Confidential information I would be surprised if Intel does not win this round.
It is quite exciting to see Longhorn, Vista, Office 2007 as well as the new CPU’s emerging in the same arena in the same time frame. It should make for an exciting desktop/laptop/server market over the next couple years. Not to mention I need a new desktop at home.
Now we only need to see what AMD does to respond, other than drop their prices, not that Intel hasn’t countered with the same marketing .
