Systems Management Server 2003 client computers experience slow performance when you run the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU)
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=924148

SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. You run the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) on an SMS client computer. You either scan for software updates or you deploy a software update. In this scenario, you may experience the following symptoms: •The SMS client computer may experience slow performance.
•The CPU usage may reach 100 percent for several minutes.
Additionally, other programs that are running on the SMS client computer may be slow to respond.

The client computer may also experience slow performance when the computer uses Windows Updates, Microsoft Update, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Typically, this issue is more noticeable on older, slower computers.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, make sure that you do not run the ITMU scan process or the software update process during regular business hours. You can schedule a time for the ITMU to scan and update client computers outside regular business hours to lessen the effect on client computers.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION
When you use the ITMU to install updates, a scan occurs before each update is applied. Therefore, performance problems are typically more noticeable when you install multiple updates that are part of a single deployment.
