Want to test that Device Management Feature Pack but didn't want to do it on your own Smartphone? Don't have one? Don't need one, now you can test it virtually!

My team mate, Keith Combs, brought it to my attention that I am not staying on top of things in regards to Mobility.  Keith let me know that the Standalone Device Emulator just released as is available for download.  I can't believe he beat me to the punch and blogged (http://blogs.technet.com/keithcombs/archive/2006/05/18/429157.aspx) it first!

You can download the Emulator and the Windows Mobile 5 Emulator with MSFP here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c62d54a5-183a-4a1e-a7e2-cc500ed1f19a&DisplayLang=en

Even more details... Yesterday we released the Microsoft Device Emulator (MDE) 1.0, a standalone version of the same Device Emulator included with Visual Studio 2005. MDE 1.0 is intended for situations when you want to demonstrate or test an application on a computer that does not have Visual Studio 2005 installed. We also released Windows Mobile 5.0 and Windows Mobile 2003 SE operating system images that you can use with the Device Emulator.MDE 1.0:

  • Runs code compiled for ARM processors rather than for x86 processors. In most cases, you can run the same binaries on the emulator as you do on the device.
  • Supports synchronizing with ActiveSync. You can use the Device Emulator with a full ActiveSync partnership. This feature allows you to debug applications that are syncing, or be able to use real synchronized data from within the Device Emulator.
  • Provides support for more development environments. The emulator has been tested for developing and debugging applications with Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio .NET 2003, and with eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 (eVC4) SP4, all using ActiveSync. No crossover serial cable is required.
  • Supports GAPI. You can write and debug GAPI games on the Device Emulator and expect them to work. You can download the free MDE 1.0 here.
