DEMO 1
-
OSD packages do not have programs, they use task sequences
-
Can use a task sequence to create your base image from a reference computer instead of manually creating the base image
-
Option in task sequence when creating a new image to install critical patches
-
Installing the SMS client and using USMT are also a task in the sequence
-
Installing additional packages after the image has been installed is also a task in the sequence, these run before the user can login and run under the SYSTEM context so the users cannot interfere with the process.
-
You can edit the sequence with the Task Sequence Editor after you have completed a sequence and want to make changes.
-
The user never sees the Control-Alt-Delete until the entire sequence has completed.
-
SMS sends status reports for each task in the sequence letting you know if it completed successfully or failed - can you say SCOM (MOM 2005)
-
You can add a sequence to format the drive or partition it in any manner you like, just like right clicking a raw partition and selecting format, you can make separate partitions, name the volumes..
-
You can also add a task to do any custom action you want, run a VBS, batch file, etc.
-
You can add conditions to tasks, if you set a condition to use WMI to check the system for a particular NIC and it returns a false you can have it skip that task!
-
If a task fails and the error on is set to ignore it continues, if it is not set, then it will exit to the end of that group, for example if it is trying to install applications and it fails it can skip the rest of the applications and move on to the next group of tasks.
-
You can have the packages download as needed or download the entire sequence to pre-stage it on a client for later mandatory install. Don't use reformat if you use download and execute, for obvious reasons.
-
USMT uses the SMP, this will encrypt the data on the server and while it is on the wire, you can set the data to be stored for n of days and then delete it.
YOU CAN RESIZE THE WINDOWS! When ever presented with a list so no more drop down menus
If you have not downloaded and played with SMSv4 you should do so now so that your comments, suggestions, and complaints can still impact the development.
Regards.
