Make sure your run the Deployment Readiness Wizard... that's a big helper in making sure you are ready to go.. SP3 is pretty easy
New Update.exe Upgrade Method
There are now two methods to upgrade from SMS 2003, SMS 2003 SP1, or SMS 2003 SP2 to SMS 2003 SP3. Interactive setup can be run from the installation CD, which is the same as upgrading to a previous SMS 2003 service pack, and the new Update.exe upgrade method can be run from extracted installation files or the update folder on the service pack CD.

Do you have to go to SP2 then to SP3?

If there is an issue, work it to root cause and resolve it then you do not have to mess with it anymore, and you know it will not impact you in other ways.
I would start with the SP3 upgrade, might be a hotfix in there that resolves the issues for you.
That and the AV exclusions.

That is a workaround at best. If you are having issues you need to resolve them. They might be impacting you in other ways you are not yet aware of.
Eventually you will wind up with workarounds on your workarounds on your.....

Yea, I did see that
Backup task completed successfully with zero errors but there could be some warnings, AFTERBACKUP.BAT will be started if available in its predefined location SMS_SITE_BACKUP 7/9/2009 10:13:03 AM 5232 (0x1470)
I’ll try that…

If it got to the stage where it was looking for AFTERBACKUP.BAT, then the backup task completed without errors.
One idea would be to create an AFTERBACKUP.BAT task with one line:-
Net.exe start SMS_EXECUTIVE

Thanks Matt
I’m looking at the article as we speak ;) I thought there was a whitepaper out there from Microsoft too…wonder where it went?
Looking in the event viewer, I think it’s the SMS_SITE_BACKUP causing those services to shutdown. But, they aren’t firing up correctly… L
My backups are set like this:
I see the Backups kickoff around 12:00am
Then around 2:13am
And…it never started backup until we kicked it…

In regards to your questions below...
What folders should you exclude from real-time AV scanning?
Use this as a reference: MyITForum Blog - by SCASSELLS
Why is your services stopping?
Within the SCCM Site server logs directory, do you see a ‘crash dump’ folder? Maybe your services is crashing for whatever reason. Also, check the system event log to see when and possible why your SCCM services stopping.
Personally, I’ve seen AV Scans cause issues within the inbox folders similar to yours – It was resolved after we setup the exclusions.
On the child site, check the Despoolr.box\Receive folder to see if you have any backlog in files.
HTH.

Cool – thanks for the tips! I’m not seeing any errors in the sender log on the parent.
Looking on the child – I do see a few objects (906) in the replmgr.box (what other boxes should I look in?)
D:\SMS\inboxes\replmgr.box
I’m also seeing a few of scanning errors in the event viewer - The scan of D:\SMS\inboxes\auth\ddm.box\jyc1p6ds.DDR has taken too long to complete and is being canceled. Scan engine version used is 5301.4018 DAT version 5670.0000.
- What other inboxes on the child should I look at?
- Where’s that AV exclusions whitepaper for SMS (if someone knows off hand)?
- Could these AV scanning errors be causing a back log, and errors with replication?
- Noticed this morning, that all the SMS related services just were stopped for no reason known to me - after restarting the SMS Executive – they all fired up. Any ideas why this might be happening?
TIA!

You need to open the sender log on the parent and look for issues, then open the inboxes on the child and look for a backlog.
Quick way to check the inboxes is to open the main inbox, click search on the explorer bar and just find all files in all subdirectories. A few thousand is typical, 100,000 is a lot.

Sorry for the lame question…I’ll try to give some logs and screen shoots.
Basically – I think a site was playing catch up all day because a service was stopped.
![]()
Not sure why this service stopped (yet). I see the Offer summary XXXXXX has not been heard from for 60 days…for a while.
The advertisement just flowed down to the other site it needed to get to. Just wondering why it took 7 hours…(which is not normal for us).

I had an advertisement that I had deleted. Things took forever for this thing to delete… why would/could that be happening? This caused some other things to be slow at one of my sites…
Why could that be happening?
