I just thought of one other possibility for Joe, and perhaps for you...
There is a known issue with SSRS, in that, you need to install it to the default database instance in order for it to work.
Pointing your R2 SSRS to a named instance will not properly work, I do not believe that this is documented.

Subject: re: [mssms] SQL Reporting Services installation
I am having a similar issue with the 7404 error, only I am running 2005 SP3 on my Central Site server and have an SRS_REPORTING_POINT installed on a remote VM. The remote VM also has SMS_REPORTING_POINT installed and is working great while running under a service account.
The service account has permissions to the site database.
SRS seems to be setup the same way as in our lab, only our lab has the SRS_REPORTING_POINT located on the central as opposed to a separated server.
Any ideas on where to look?

I do not know of others that are running in a mixed SQL environment like that... I'd recommend upgrading your SQL Server 2005 to 2008.
The hotfix you sited is one to correct a bogus status message, it would not have any effect on your scenario.

Subject: [mssms] SQL Reporting Services installation
We're running Config Mgr R2 and are trying to configure SQL Reporting Services using an existing installation of SRS that we have on another server. Our Config Mgr database is running SQL 2005, and the server running SRS is running SQL 2008 SP1.
We added our central site server's computer account to the administrator group on the server running SRS, added the SRS server as a site server and created the Reporting Services Point. However, we're getting the error "SRS is not installed or properly configured on SRS Reporting point Server <servername>".
Found the following hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957576, but it says it applies to Config Mgr R2 running MS SQL Server 2008, and we're running 2005.
Does anyone know if the fact that the SRS server is running a different version of SQL will cause any issues? Would this hotfix apply, even though the site server DB is running 2005?
