Subject: RE: [mssms] Install WSUS on existing ConfigMgr Site Server
We are currently testing using the free version of SQL (SQL Express) for our SUP’s. This is the only cost effective measure we could see with the quantities we are looking at. We talked this over with the MS Design guys and they said the sizes should be consistent with the needs of a sup.
I hope this info helps.

Just one question, more from a licensing perspective. Is installing WSUS, for SUP purposes, allowed under the “Configuration Manager Server 2007 R2 with SQL Server Technology” licensing option?

Configuration Manager Server 2007 R2 with SQL Server Technology
$1,321 U.S.
Server license for full application, server, and client management. Note: SQL Server Technology included in this offering is the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and may only be used to support Configuration Manager 2007 R2.
** Configuration Manager 2007 R2 requires Microsoft SQL Server to support its operational activities. You are able to either buy SQL Server 2005 separately or in conjunction with Configuration Manager 2007 R2. The latter will be sold as Configuration Manager 2007 R2 with SQL Server Technology. The SQL Server Technology is the SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and will not be able to be used as a standalone SQL Server deployment or with any other application besides Configuration Manager 2007 R2.
I’ve seen on this list that certain Microsoft TAMs have said this isn’t an option, but to me this seems ridiculous. A Software Update Point, which is a ConfigMgr role, requires WSUS to function, so surely that falls under the “may only be used to support Configuration Manager”.
Has anyone had any recent experience on this subject?

Stewart,
I believe the answer is yes, you can take over an existing WSUS server. That is more or less the effective method they are using in the documentation for installing it in the first place:

Subject: [mssms] Install WSUS on existing ConfigMgr Site Server
I started my new gig today and have discovered that none of the four ConfigMgr site servers have WSUS installed. There are a few WSUS servers floating around that are in various states of operation. What is required, and more importantly, is it even feasible to install WSUS on an existing production site server? If not, then can ConfigMgr take over an existing WSUS server for it's own purposes?
