Right, but our IT purchasing is not centralized so there would be well over 200 model names that would need to be supported.  And every time someone brings in a computer thy got at Fry’s over the weekend, I would need to modify my TS to support that previously unknown model.

There are only like 5 or 6 different driver packages, Intel <ICH7, Intel >=ICH8, ATI, a couple of nVidias, and some Dell PERCs and that covers almost all of my computer models.  For the time being I think it will be easier to bake in the drivers than it would be to make a task sequence entry for every possible model.  Plus, I have all that working already in SMS/BDD.  If I was starting from scratch, I don’t know which way I’d go.  Getting all those storage drivers baked in to the image was “challenging.”

I wish I could move to Vista too.  The real sticking point for me is IE 6 support and fear of the new GPO system (mostly the latter).

Christopher,

You can also get computer name/type by typing "wmic csproduct get name" at the command prompt from within WinPE or from within the OS.

I agree with Michael :-P

But you can easily identify what the model name is by running the first part of the OSD deployments cd and when it asks for the computer name simply hit f8 and open the variables file. (need to have command prompt added to boot image)
It will list the model. Also atleast with dell you can usually just put "%755%" using the model from the front of the box. i havent found a dell yet that this didnt work for.

It has taken me several weeks to go though all of our models but it is well worth it.
Because now i have a list of what is supported and what is not supported :-)

Thanks,

Option 3:  Move to Windows Vista and never worry about mass storage drivers again.  (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Yes, your understanding sounds right to me.

Subject: [mssms] SCCM OSD Mass Storage question

I am trying to figure out Mass Storage in deploying Windows XP using SCCM OSD with MDT.  I am moving from SMS 200 BDD 2007 to SCCM 2007 R2 with MDT.

From what I can tell, I have two options for Mass Storage Drivers.

I can either do it the old (SMS 2003) way, place the drivers in the captured image using a modified MassStorageDrivers section in Sysprep.inf

Or

I can do it the new way which is to have a MassStorage Driver package that I apply during the deployment stage rather than the capture stage.

The cons to the first option is that a new capture is required any time I want to add a new storage driver.

The cons of the second option is that I need to know the model name or have some way to otherwise identify every single computer that needs out of box drivers and make a filtered "Apply Driver Package" for every one of the models of computers that requires an F6 type driver.

I think option two sounds like a lot more work, but more organized.  Also, new or unknown models are unlikely to work without intervention on the OSD team.  With option one, it takes a whole new chipset to be release before a change is needed.

So my question is, do I understand the situation correctly?
