Subject: RE: [mssms] Software/Hardware Inventory Client Agents

ok, that is what i thought, just wanted to make sure i was correct..

yeah, i've always set the settings on the primary site for that remote site and never had issues, but wanted to make sure i had a good understanding of how it worked, and was curious why the settings were even there...

No legacy clients here, all advanced..

Thanks

Advanced clients always get their policies as defined by the 3-digit site code (primary) to which they belong.

I know, I know--you're probably wondering why a Secondary site still has choices there for modifying client agents.  It's a legacy thing from SMS2003, really.  You could have Legacy Clients (think Windows NT Server 4.0 or NT Workstation 4.0) which could belong to a SMS 2003 Secondary site--in that case they'd need to get their agent settings from the secondary site.

Then since console didn't really change from SMS2003 to CM07, to remove that from showing up was (I'm guessing here) not worth the effort.  Just basically ignore Secondary site settings, except for boundaries, and throttling with the sender.  That's pretty much all you'd do on a secondary site settings in CM.

If you have a primary site and a secondary site in another location, since the clients in that 2nd site report to the primary, then the inventory agents get their policies from the primary correct?

For Software/Hardware agents (and any other agents for that matter), you have to make the changes at each primary site; it doesn't replicate down (or up) for settings.

You might be able to get away with using one of the "Transfer Site Settings" wizards out there, I think there's one in the SMS2003 toolkit for sms 03; I don't remember about CM's toolkit--I'd have to go check.

The reason it doesn't replicate is because one of the reasons for primary sites are internal politics--that the central site admins cannot change settings on the child sites (unless they can directly connect to the child's console themselves & have the rights to change site settings).

(slight OT:  can't wait for RBAC as mentioned at MMS this year for CM next!)

This might be a foolish question....but my father said there are no such thing as foolish questions, only damn fool answers!

Our environment consists of 1 SMS 2003 SP3 parent server and 2 SMS 2003 SP3 child servers.  All OS's are Windows 2003 SP2.

I have recently changed the hardware for one of the child servers.  I got to looking at the software and hard client agents on the child sites.  Do the parameters that are set in Software Inventory Collection and File Collection and the schedules that are set in Software and Hardware Inventory agents replicate down from the parent site to the child sites?  Or do I have to manually make them the same?

I did a search, but could not find the answer.

Thanks,
Paul
