Hmmmm use SMB for 7 patches or download 1+ GB to a workstation.... for now the SMB method has been good to me, but I do like the sound of the "selective downloads" ! :)
SCCM 2007 presentation to management is currently being prepared. I hope to be able to present it by the end of the month....

Good point, Henry J
…and to John’s point, that’s why installing patches over the network is not favored because of how risky it is.
One hiccup of the network on a critical OS-level patch, times the number of machines installing the patch…and you’re toast. Not good.

Agreed, but then you're not using BITS for the downloads to the clients, you're using straight SMB. No BITS throttling, no checkpoint restarts, no graceful recovery in the event of network hiccup.

Your statement for SMS 2003 assumes Download/Execute. With our patch package we execute from the DP so that only the "required" patches are applied without downloading hundreds of patches...

...and with "selective downloads" in ConfigMgr, a single large package is even more appealing.
If WU determines that a client needs 3 updates and the large package has 300...it will only request/download the 3 it needs.
Unlike SMS 2003 where if only 3 are needed, all 300 are still downloaded...just to install the 3.

I see a benefit of a large package as being the abillty to have all updates applied at one time by running a single advertisement. If a client misses a patch they can rerun the large package on the next iteration and catch it up, still running a single advrtisement. Keeps things simple.
Thanks,
Mark

[mssms] Updates per month package / one big package
What are the benefits of each:
a single package for each month of approved updates vs. one huge package containing all approved updates
