Notes from Webcast: Deploying System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (Level 200) 1032343568
Question: I thought for some reason SCCM did not need a client installed? Was I just mistaken?
Answer: We still need the client just like SMS 2003
Question: I was at MMS 2007 and attended a few of your sessions Wally, when was it that you said you're retiring? Will you be at MMS 2008 & or 2009?
Answer: No, what they hopefully said, was that I had said I'd retire before I left the SMS team. I have no current plans on retiring soon. I do plan to be at MMS next year, unless they don't want me :-)
Question: when will training be available for the product?
Answer: It is in development now. Their goal was to be about 30 days post RTM, but I don't know if that is still going to happen (my guess is not). But I'm sure before the end of the year.
Question: Wally are you available for client consultancy engagements?
Answer: You would need to work through your normal Microsoft TAP/account team to get them involved, and if you need further assistance, they know how to get those smarter than myself in the loop :-)
Question: Thanks for answering all our questions and thanks to Wally for another great webcast.
Answer: We had some great people answering questions, they make me look good (or at least better than I am :-)
Question: Good to hear Wally in regard to retirement, I'll plan to attend more of your session at MMS when it's NOT in Las Vegas... it's a gov't thing.
Answer: Bummer, it is Las Vegas again next year. I agree, LV is not my favorite place - I prefer San Diego.
Question: many thanks
Answer: You are welcome
Question: I did not understand the answer to the child SMS servers/child WSUS servers. What is the recommended configuration of child SMS servers and multiple WSUS servers? Any concerns of using more than one WSUS server?
Answer: I'm not sure what the previous answer was, but what I understand is that each SCCM site needs its own WSUS server (with the exception of child secondary site don't require on (can have one, but not required)). As a child site, your SUP automatically gets synchronized by the parent site. So only one WSUS server per hierarchy needs access to MU. Does that help?
Question: What!!! Wally's retiring? When???
Answer: No, I have no plans for it. Someone said at MMS this year it was announced that I am. I am not, what I said in an internal meeting was that I would retire before I left the SMS team :-)
Question: Very informative sessions. Thank you
Answer: You are welcome
Question: how would I get more info / training for Federated Management?
Answer: If you want to explain more of the scenario, I can try to help. Or if you already did explain it before, I can try to review the log to see what was asked.
Question: Yes that helped (only need to setup WSUS server to sync with on central server)?
Answer: Yes, only the central site. You can't even configure child sites to sync with MU, only the parent site.
Question: So Wally.... how do you really feel about the name change from SMS to SCCM?
Answer: I personally don't like it, but I understand the reasoning behind it. You noticed I said "SMS v4" numerous times :-) I'm sure eventually I'll get used to it, but it will be a while.
Question: I am an MSP. We have multiple clients that we need to support / manage. I would prefer to use SCCM, but not sure if it is actually designed or will work in our scenario
Answer: You should definitely download the Beta and test it out in a lab environment first. There's also a virtual lab session you can try beforehand to just get the very basics. Check out http://www.microsoft.com/sms and click the link at the top for Configuration Manager Beta 2. There's a link there to Connect, where you can sign up for the beta and download the product, as well as product docs and other info.
Question: Thank you for another great webcast! Really appreciate it.
Answer: You are welcome
Question: Has software metering been improved in the new version? and does the metered data flow up the hierarchy?
Answer: Same as it was in SMS 2003, as far as replication up the hierarchy (it does, but you need the same rules at the parent site). In terms of metering, we can automatically create software metering rules based on file/application usage from clients (configurable as a site setting). And the rules are disabled by default. But we do create them when enough clients (10% by default) have used the same app.
Question: I plan to use the AD schema updater from RC1 to update by Development, Acceptance and Production AD schemas. Is that plan OK? It takes several weeks for our AD team to approve and do the work and I want to be ready to deply soon after RTM.
Answer: We have no plans to change the schema, and they've been fixed for almost two years now :)
Question: Is there a document / picture that shows how all the various back-end support servers (MOM, SCCM, Operations, etc.) should/could tie together?
Answer: With all the various System Center components, I don't know. I'd check the www.microsoft.com/systemcenter site.
Question: So if I have my AD schema already extended using the SMS 2003 SP 2 extensions then I don't need to extend again for SCCM?
Answer: No, you would still need to extend for Configuration Manager 2007 - we simply haven't changed them since Beta 1 was released.
Question: Wally, thanks for the info today. I am signed up for Friday too. If at all possible, I would really like to chat with you or someone at a higher lever and discuss what we are doing and how we can better leverage the MS products. We are at the forefront of our community in the offerings we are providing as MSPs.
Answer: Sure, feel free to email me and I'll either help or get you to the appropriate person to help.
Question: Do SCCM XP clients require .NET Framework 2.0?
Answer: If you want to scan them with DCM they do. Otherwise not unless they use the admin console.
