You’re probably peripherally aware that more and more details about Windows Server “8” are leaking out of Redmond. But Windows Server “8” isn’t the only news out of Redmond to which you should be paying attention. You should also keep an eye on the System Center 2012 suit as this suite promises to be as important, if not more important, to your career.

ENGL Driver Manager 2 for SCCM and MDT is now released!
26 July 11 06:07 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

I'm pleased to announce that ENGL Driver Manager 2.0 for SCCM and MDT is now available to download from the ENGL web site.
Finding and deploying drivers is one of the most time consuming and troublesome tasks that administrators must undertake to deploy Windows. Driver Manager lowers the cost associated with driver management by automating the manual steps that have to be repeated for each new hardware platform.
Driver Manager 2 includes driver integration and deployment for both SCCM 2007 and MDT 2010.

  • Import hardware inventory from SCCM or Driver Manager Scanner
  • Find and download drivers from PC manufacturer and OEM's
  • Analyse drivers to determine the installation method
  • Create SCCM Driver and Software packages and assign driver categories
  • Create MDT Out-of-box drivers or Application packages

For further information including feature list, screen shots, downloads and evaluation licenses, visit the Driver Manager home page.

Review: Shavlik SCUPdates
22 July 11 01:57 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

Considering that third-party applications now pose a bigger security risk than Microsoft software, all organizations must have a strategy for ensuring that non-Microsoft applications are patched in a timely manner. This is where Shavlik’s SCUPdates can help.

SCUPdates supplements Microsoft System Center Updates Publisher for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) 2007. System Center Updates Publisher publishes third-party software updates to Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) for deployment by using SCCM. Software update catalogs (.cab files) or updates that are provided as .exe files, .msi files, or .msp files can be imported into System Center Updates Publisher.

System Center Configuration Manager IP Goes Production
21 July 11 12:45 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

I am very proud to announce that I have released a finalized version of the SCCM integration pack. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Beta / RC releases of this integration pack. We had 498 downloads of the project during these phases with many bug reports (and subsequent fixes) and feature requests. What we have now is the result of a great community effort that I hope will continue.

Netflix opens up more Android devices, Xoom works with a little extra effort. Here’s how.
21 July 11 11:00 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

The Motorola Xoom is an excellent Android tablet.  I spend a fair amount of time researching and looking at other Android tablets as they are released, and I’ve yet to have buyers remorse.  Quite frankly, the Xoom is still the best Android tablet available.  The only issue that has kept the Xoom from having mass appeal, is the price.  Simply put, tablets cannot be even close to the same price as a comparable netbook or notebook.  Whoever decided these price points is an idiot.

Netflix released an updated version (1.3.0) of their app last night that almost doubles the number of supported devices.  You can get the updated app in the Android Market, and it currently (officially) supports the following devices:

Maintaining your Application Deployment History when Re-deploying a Workstation

Thursday, Aug 11, 2011 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm  Pacific

  • In this session we'll look at the different ways to maintain the applications previously deployed when a workstation needs to be re-imaged.
  • We’ll look at 3 different ways to achieve this, based on your current application deployment processes, and based on your expectations when all application deployments need to be ready.
  • The session will leave some time to discuss these methods and brainstorm on alternative ways to achieve this.
