What is your journey towards IT as a Service? Allow Microsoft to accelerate your journey!
30 November 10 02:05 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

If yesterday’s demand of IT was “do it cheaper”, today’s business/ application owner demands
“faster & simpler & cheaper” services. If you can’t, the business goes “Then please get out of
my way. I am technology savvy enough to spin up a few cloud instances of my own! I use a
variety of devices and online commerce web sites during my Sunday evenings at home – they
work just fine and very simply at that. So I don’t want to walk in to office on Monday morning
to go through all those complex IT change requests to deploy one small application on a virtual
server – which then takes 4 to 6 weeks to spin up!” And then all of those shadow applications
start popping up all over the place. As an IT guy, you don’t want that, do you?

SCCM and SCUP Catalog Deployments for Acrobat and Reader X – IT Matters
30 November 10 08:36 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

No more headaches over updating and patching Adobe Acrobat or Reader.

With the release of Acrobat and Reader X, managing updates and patches is easy. Adobe will soon supply a System Center Updates Publisher (SCUP) catalog so that administrators may more easily deploy and manage Acrobat and Reader X clients across the enterprise.

System Center Updates Publisher (SCUP) is a stand-alone tool that is used in conjunction with Microsoft’s System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to allow administrators to more accurately and efficiently install, update, and patch software. Together, SCCM and SCUP are Microsoft’s latest change and configuration management solution. SCCM provides features such as metering, asset intelligence, inventorying, and improved remote client administration. For example, SCCM users can easily determine what products versions are installed including all dot and double dot patches without writing a complicated query.

The SCUP catalog for Acrobat X and Reader X will be made available along with the first update which we expect in February of 2011.

Note: For users who participated in the Acrobat X prerelease program and were able to access the beta SCUP catalog for Acrobat 9, we will no longer be supplying SCUP catalogs for version 9 products. The version 9 SCUP catalog was a proof-of-concept exercise that allowed us to develop the SCUP catalog for Acrobat X.

The SCUP catalog for Acrobat X requires SCUP 4.5. All other requirements are defined by the Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007.

Read SCCM-SCUP Deployments in the Enterprise Administration for the Acrobat Family of Products document for more details.

Outlook 2010: Where to find the Feature to Export Your RSS Feeds
29 November 10 10:22 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

Someone asked me for my OPML file recently.  I had not exported RSS feeds since upgrading to Outlook 2010 so I wasn’t at all familiar with the process.  After a bit of searching and navigating the Outlook 2010 menus, I finally found the location of the function.  It’s definitely a bit hidden and not as easy to find as in previous versions of Outlook, so hopefully this will help save you some time in the event the task is asked of you.

1. In Outlook 2010, click on the File menu option:

1

2. Next click Open:

2

3. Then, click on the Import option:

3

4. Select the Export RSS Feeds to an OPML file, and click Next to walk through the Wizard:

Microsoft Asks Spoon.Net to Take Internet Explorer Off the Cloud
16 November 10 09:44 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

Spoon is one of those really innovative products/services that has some serious promise in the world of the Cloud.  I was first made aware of Spoon during TechEd 2010 US in New Orleans in the Expo.  It was a bright spot.  Since then, I’ve been watching their progress.

Spoon stores apps in the Cloud and allow you to run each application without having to install the application on the local computer.  It’s really neat stuff and you should check it out when you get a chance.  There’s a lot more to what Spoon is and does, but you can find that out at their web site.

As Microsoft is pushing “Cloud Power” and promoting that they are “all in” it’s ironic that Microsoft has requested that Spoon drop versions of Internet Explorer from the Spoon servers.

On Spoon’s web site today it reads:

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Microsoft has asked us to remove Internet Explorer from this service.

We hope to work with Microsoft to restore cloud-based access to their browsers shortly, but in the meantime we have disabled access to Internet Explorer.

We will post more information as we learn additional details.  Please check back with us soon, follow us on Twitter @spoonapps, or join our Facebook page at facebook.com/spoonapps.

Interestingly enough, all other major browsers are still be served by Spoon like Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera.  Also interesting is that Internet Explorer remains a free download from the Microsoft site and I’m sure there are quite a few instances and different versions sitting in VMs all over the world.  It’ll be interesting to see what happens and what Microsoft’s communication will be on this.

Updated momclean Reskit tool for OM2007R2

I noticed on the forums someone was having trouble using this with the R2 release.  Here is an updated version of the momclean tool to use for uninstalling OM2007R2 when traditional methods have failed.  Note: None of the command line parameters have changed.  All that has been updated it the product GUIDs the tool supports.  Also, I plan to get the official release of this in one of the upcoming CUs for R2.

Deployment Geek Week 2011
16 November 10 02:33 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

A 5 day journey with two of the world’s foremost deployment and rollout consultants Johan Arwidmark & Mikael Nyström. Five days focusing on the deployment process and in particular deployment of Windows 7. The training is aimed towards any midsized to enterprise level corporate with the intention to deploy Windows 7 throughout the organization.

The class is based on real life experience from our instructors who are also consultants working in this environment on a daily basis. We have taken the gist from several of our world class trainings, and combined into this five day intense training.

The training is an alternation between lecture and hands on labs, with focus on the delegates getting a true understanding of the process from learning by doing.

Managing Windows Phone 7 with SCCM V.Next
16 November 10 10:35 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

The details around this are still moving but SCCM V.Next will provide "light" management of WP7 devices thru the Exchange connector.  Can't provide all the details here but it appears we will provide the ability to set basic policy, get basic inventory, do remote wipe, etc from SCCM V.Next console.  I'll add more info as it becomes available for the public.  WM 6.1 and 6.5 will have alot more functionality than WP7 in this area.
