We managed to sneak onto Brad’s calendar to catch up with him about his current thoughts about the release. Not only is Client Management close to Brad’s (and my ) heritage (our 3rd release we have been involved in) but this particular release carries a number of big promises he has made to you, our customers and partners.

Interesting article: Spiceworks community not as large as advertised – and product really doesn’t “do a lot”
27 May 10 05:49 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

I've poked around the Spiceworks platform, and it's impressive for its simplicity and power for a free platform. It won't do a lot, but it will do rudimentary inventory and asset discovery, help desk ticketing, resource utilization tracking and network monitoring. I doubt anyone would mistake the power of a commercial-grade RMM/PSA combination for what Spiceworks offers, but it's "good enough" for its target market.

Likewise, I can attest that Spiceworks doesn't have the community that it claims. Many of the members listed in its IT Service Provider community are inactive (at least they're not participating in the forums), and there's only 30,000 of them there. As a test, I randomly contacted an active member of that forum expecting to get one of the many thousands of MSPs. The person who responded was the junior IT person at a Midwest manufacturer of truck jacks and lifts. He's hardly an MSP, but he did speak highly of the Spiceworks platform and how it provided features that his company couldn't afford in commercial software.

What's New in the Configuration Manager Documentation Library for May 2010
27 May 10 03:58 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

The following information lists the topics that contain significant changes since the March 2010 update.

About Task Sequences

- Updated to clarify that task sequences cannot be advertised to users. Task sequences must be advertised to computers.

How to Capture and Restore the User State

- Updated to clarify how to create a task sequence to capture a user state.

About Configuration Manager Discovery

- Updated to include information about how to configure a specific domain controller for Active Directory discovery rather than the default setting of the nearest domain controller to the site server.

About Standard and Branch Distribution Points

- Updated to clarify that branch distribution points require advertisements to be configured for the option Download content from distribution point and run locally. Branch distribution points do not support the advertisement configuration of Run program from distribution point. This clarification is also added to Choose Between a Standard and Branch Distribution Point.

Step-By-Step Example Deployment of the PKI Certificates Required for Configuration Manager Native Mode: Windows Server 2003 Certification Authority

- Updated to clarify that when you specify the certificate Subject for the site server signing certificate, the exact text string in English must be used, in the same case, without a trailing period, and the site code must be specified at the end of the string in the same case as it appears in the Configuration Manager console.

System Health Validator Point Component Properties: General Tab

- Updated to correct the maximum value for the Validity period (hours) to 168.

Program Name Properties: Advanced Tab

- Updated to clarify that the "Allow this program to be installed from the Install Software task sequence without being advertised" option is required only when you are using a task sequence to install multiple applications.

Quickly Managing Specific Application Sounds in Windows 7
27 May 10 01:43 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

Working with 2 monitors, I usually have Windows Media Center on one monitor, either streaming Netflix or playing live TV.

wmc

What happens a lot, is that I want to watch a video on Youtube or on myITforum.com TV, or even listen to a Podcast.  If you’ve used WMC at all, you know that muting WMC actually mutes the entire computer instead of just WMC.  Windows has the ability to mute per application, which is great, but you have to dig deep into Windows sound settings to get to the feature.

What I’ve done is create a quick access icon on my Windows 7 task bar so that the Volume Mixer is always available.

5 - always available

To do this…

1. Locate the Sound icon in the Windows 7 system tray.

1 - volume control

2. Right-click on the Sound icon and choose “Open Volume Mixer”.

2 - volume mixer

3. Once the Volume Mixer is open…

3- volume mixer

…drop down to the icon on the taskbar, right-click on the icon, and choose “Pin this program to the taskbar”

4 - pin to taskbar

Now…you’ll always have the Volume Mixer icon handy.

5 - always available

Adobe considers shorter update cycles - The H Security: News and Features

According to Brad Arkin, Adobe's Director of Product Security and Privacy, the company is currently considering reducing the interval between security updates for Adobe Reader from 90 to 30 days. Adobe started a three-monthly cycle in mid 2009 and has since been releasing updates for Adobe Reader and Acrobat on the second Tuesday of every third month – the same day as Microsoft's official patch day.
