Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2010 Beta 1 – ZDNet Review
29 January 10 10:58 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

Backup is one task in IT that no one looks forward to, so if you've been looking for a comprehensive, low maintenance solution, Data Protection Manager (DPM) from Microsoft might just be the ticket.

DPM is specifically designed to protect Microsoft workloads: Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, AD and Hyper-V. It also follows the paradigm shift for data protection sweeping through the IT industry: rely on hard disks for backup and recovery; only use tape for long-term archiving.

Culminis is now GITCA
29 January 10 07:26 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

Following consultation with the members of the NEW organization, Culminis has been renamed to Global IT Community Association (GITCA).
As of December 1st, 2009 all reference to the organization will be under the new name.

During the last year’s transition from a Corporation to a fully volunteer organization, it was felt that a name change was necessary to complete the cycle and begin anew. The primary values and aims of the volunteer organization have not changed and we eagerly look forward to serving your needs in the future.

This name was chosen because:

  • It is descriptive of our geographic coverage, our “customers” and our objective of bringing people together for mutual benefit

  • It can be shortened to GITCA for easy recognition

  • GITCA lends itself to a short memorable domain name such as www.gitca.org which can now be used to access this site

This name change presents an excellent opportunity to take the learning from the past and combine that with fresh, bright ideas from the volunteers and the community as a whole to move forward with purpose and determination to benefit all.  The new logo for GITCA is

Create a search folder in SCCM to show all the software updates required by client machines

Something that I recently learned from a colleague of mine was how to create a search folder in SCCM to show all the software updates required by client machines.  It is non-intuitive, but in my testing it does seem to work.

Most of the Configuration Manager administrators noticed, that Custom Update for Adobe Flash Player 10 coming from http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/licensing/win/AdobeFlashPlayerCatalog.cab does not have sufficient applicability and prerequisite rules. So, I just "did it right" and republished it. Please use it on your own risk.

Here is a cab that you need to add to your SCUP

NightWatchman Server Edition - Drowsy State Explained
28 January 10 12:48 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

OK you lucky people, sometimes I think we make this too easy for you! It's time for another superb NightWatchman Server Edition (NWSE) Whitepaper from Mark Blackburn.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Mark since our pre-1E days at Microsoft, and I have to say that during that time I don't think I've come across anyone who is better at conveying complex knowledge in an enjoyable, readable form.

This paper was actually released just before Christmas 2009, and I thought that it was too good to be lost in the haze of good food, snow, and deluges of emails from Amazon telling us all exactly what we should be buying for our loved ones..

Mark’s masterpiece describes perfectly one of the keystones of NightWatchman Server Edition (NWSE) – Drowsy state.
