New RSS feed for just myITforum.com Community Articles
25 September 09 06:15 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

As we continue to migrate to the new, ground-breaking WYSIWYG article system, we’ve added a new RSS feed just for the new article formats, so you can stay on top of the latest and greatest myITforum.com articles.

myITforum.com columnists are experts in their areas.  We have over 200 columnists producing some serious content continually – all original material instead of centralized links to information on other web sites.  The articles comprise the knowledge and expertise of people just like you who simply want to share solutions to common and uncommon problems in every area of systems management.  This is just one more reason why myITforum.com has been so successful for the last 10 years as the only resource for System Center and Systems Management support.  myITforum.com is powered by you! – not just a couple people.  It takes everyone’s involvement to support the ever-growing list of management applications.

As we progress with the new article system, look for new RSS feeds where you can grab content by keyword or even specific areas for all products under the System Center umbrella.  And, it really doesn’t stop there.  myITforum.com columnists write about things that affect your daily professional lives in areas of security, scripting, database administration, Active Directory/GPO, Exchange, etc., etc. – because systems management should not stop with System Center.  Just because it doesn’t fall under the System Center umbrella at Microsoft doesn’t mean it doesn’t need to be managed.

Here’s the new catch-all RSS feed for all submitted myITforum.com articles:

The Deployment Guys : Using Device Aliases for Hardware Specific Application Installation
    25 September 09 03:42 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

Defining setting, applications, etc. by model works in many instances.  However, there are time when a device may or may not be installed in any particular model (e.g. broadband wireless adapter) and you may need to install an application only if the device is installed.  I had just such a need at my current customer and this led me to develop a concept of Device Aliases.  I define a Device Alias as a friendly name given to a device or groups of devices for which you want to configure the same settings, applications, etc.

The Deployment Guys : Making WinPE Wait for Network in LTI Deployments
    25 September 09 03:40 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

In some environments, network device drivers and/or infrastructure take longer to load than WinPE waits before running the task sequence. This can be due to congested DHCP scopes, link negotiation latency or slow loading network drivers. In these cases, it is necessary to delay the start of the task sequence until a valid IP address is obtained otherwise the task sequence will fail.

In order to do this, you can create a script that will wait for a valid IP address before continuing on with the LiteTouch Wizard. The LiteTouch Wizard is launched using a RunSynchronous command in the Unattend.xml file for WinPE. MDT obtains this file from %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Deployment Toolkit\Templates folder. Here are instructions for doing this with MDT 2008 and an x86 Boot Image

Michael Niehaus' Windows and Office deployment ramblings : Running PowerShell scripts as part of a task sequence
    22 September 09 01:47 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

Both MDT 2010 Lite Touch and ConfigMgr 2007 run the same task sequencer.  This task sequencer can run any command that you want, just specify the command line to use.  That’s the simple part – the harder part is figuring out what this command line should do.  Often the command, a VBScript or PowerShell script, needs to get information from the task sequence itself, accessing variables in the task sequence environment.  Remember, these task sequence variables aren’t environment variables – they are distinctly separate, so you can’t use the PowerShell “Env:” drive.

The Operations Manager Support Team Blog : Microsoft Windows Key Management Service Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 v2 Released

The Key Management Service is used to activate computers running Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. Each activation request is logged on the KMS host. The KMS Management Pack collects data from the event logs of defined KMS hosts, and monitors those hosts for availability. This monitoring provides visibility into the activation traffic and the license status of volume activation clients on the network. This management pack monitors uptime and operational health of the KMS host(s) under management.
