Just how popular is basketball?  No matter where we went in China, each school had a basketball court or, at least, a hoop.  In Beijing, they have an entire public park dedicated to honing their hoop skills.

So, how serious are the Chinese about basketball?  I’m sure Yao Ming’s entrance into the NBA had a lot to do with it, but I’m pretty positive that even the Shaolin monks have heard of Michael Jordan.  How do I know?

This picture was taken in a court yard at the Shaolin temple near Deng Feng (Pin Yin: dung fung), China.

Shaolin Basketball

Buddhism and Basketball.
