Game we made up in China - may be a good one for MMS 2008
    23 April 08 05:38 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

There are a lot of touristy spots in Beijing.  For the better part of 2.5 weeks, we didn't see anything like these, in Kunming, the Himalayan mountains, Wuhan, ZhengZhou, etc.  But, we spent the last 4 days in Beijing, which was a bit of a culture shock after traveling the other, more authentic areas China.

So, after spending a lot of time doing serious work and traveling, we were ready for some fun.  So, we made up a game.

Our goal was to be in as many of *other* people's pictures as we could.  We would sneak, slide, crouch -- whatever it took be included in other "tourists" photos.  You see, there are good number of people in Beijing who are tourists, and most of them are actually Chinese people.  In the past, the Chinese have rarely traveled more than 10 miles their entire life.  But, because of China's boom in economy, more people have money, so more people are traveling.  It's just like here in America.  How many people can say they've been the Grand Canyon?  I bet a good majority have not.  And, when we visit a landmark like this, we take photos like it's our job.  Same thing in China.  The majority of tourists at the tourist sites like the Great Wall, The Shaolin Temple, The Forbidden City, etc. are Chinese people.

So, anyway, it would break down like this. (click on the images for a larger view)

A sneak attack, like the following picture, is worth 50 points (at the Forbidden City)...

    RodInPic2.JPG

A full-frontal assault is worth 100 points (at the Forbidden City)...

    RodInPic1.jpg

    Yet, another full-frontal...

    RodInPic4.jpg

And, if someone actually asks you to be in the picture with them (which happened pretty regularly in China because we were foreigners), that's worth 500 points (this is at the Shaolin temple)...

    RodInPic3.JPG

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, too.  Once, I was trying to get in a picture where a boyfriend was trying to take a keepsake picture of his lovely girlfriend in downtown Beijing.  He realized before snapping the picture, got mad, and waved me off angrily.  Oh well.

Another time, we were at the Forbidden City and a Chinese girl was trying to take a picture of her friend.  I "sidled" up beside her, and got in the picture before they realized what was happening.  One of the Chinese girls turned to me and said in a plain but gruff English voice "So, do you want to be in our picture?"  I said, "Yes!"  I stood beside the supposed Chinese girl and had our picture taken for real.

The Chinese thought we were superstars.

Seriously...Scorpions were the most tasty snack I found in Beijing.  I went back for seconds.  They have a distinct nutty flavor and are extremely crunchy.  You eat the entire thing, stinger and all.

I received an email from Trend Micro *today*, telling me that my AntiVirus coverage expired *last week*.

SANS reports an average of 7 minutes between attacks on Internetfacing

servers. This means that within 7 minutes another bad guy will

attempt to hack your network. Under this constant stress, you've gotta'

be smart about how you secure your servers. A component of Server

2003 and Server 2008 - get smart with the Security Configuration

Wizard (SCW). This comprehensive but complicated tool can help take

MMS Session SS03 Manage Your Environment Using Microsoft Forefront Integration Kit for Network Access Protection through FCS to SCCM Integration

Make sure you stop by Titian 2201B at 10:15 on Thursday to watch me attempt to keep from looking like a deer in the headlights while I present the document I wrote on integrating Forefront Client Security (FCS) and ConfigMgr. I look forward to the opportunity to show off the documentation that I mentioned in an earlier blog post. I have gotten some pretty good feedback on the document and nobody has complained that it set their datacenter on fire (phew!) but MMS is a tough crowd from a technical perspective.

SY31 Demystifying the Configuration Manager SQL

    Database

    300 Greg Shields

    Veronese 2401B Mon 4/28 3:00p - 4:15p

SCCM 2007 is a powerful management tool that sits atop a powerful

database. While SCCM’s administrative consoles are great for many

tasks, there is great power in understanding the SQL that stores its

data. Queries return faster. Reports and Collections are easier to

create. In this deeply technical and hugely popular session, we’ll shine

a bright light on SCCM’s SQL database. You’ll learn how to relate what

you see in the console to what you see in the database. You’ll discover

how to translate between SMS’s internal WQL to native SQL. And

you’ll leave with the knowledge you need to create your own queries

outside the console and create your own tools using SCCM’s SQL data.

SY32 System Center Configuration Manager 2007

    Client Troubleshooting

    300 Angie Stahl

    Bellini 2001B Fri 5/2 8:30a - 9:45a

Now that you have that shiny new SCCM 2007 infrastructure, let's talk

about client troubleshooting! This session is a deep dive into the client -

we'll talk about remote troubleshooting, process flow, and digging into

those logs to solve your problems as well as interpreting the new state

messages. Special attention will be spent on the new Software Updates

process, as well as Branch Distribution Points and Desired

Configuration Monitoring. We will also discuss how to leverage

PowerShell to intiate actions on remote clients.

SY33 SCCM 2007 Scripting and Console Extensions

    300 Greg Ramsey

    Bellini 2001B Wed 4/30 10:15a - 11:30a

In this session, VBScript and Windows PowerShell will be used to

perform site and client functions to make your job as an SCCM

administrator easier. Adding Right-Click console extensions to the

SCCM console will be examined in detail. You will learn how to script

advertisement creation, package modification, adding systems to

collections, monitor site status, and more! We'll also discuss how to

leverage Vista Gadgets to take care of some of those quick-and-easy

tasks without even opening the SCCM console!

SY35 SQL Performance Tips for SMS / SCCM

    Reporting Gurus

    300 Brian Mason; John Nelson

    Veronese 2401B Mon 4/28 4:30p - 5:45p

Brian Mason (MS MVP SMS) and John Nelson

(www.number2blog.com) will show you how to speed SQL & web

reports so that they don't melt your server, time out, or make your

boss wonder if you know what you're doing. While Brian writes a few

reports (with an SMS/SCCM focus), John will improve Brian's attempts

(with a SQL focus). You'll get tips on how to find that data you're

collecting quickly and present it in speedy web reports or pivot tables.

You'll get tips on keeping SQL healthy and lean, and what to look for

when building a new server. How will Wells Fargo install SQL for its

200K client infrastructure? From web reports to SQL Management

studio to SMS/SCCM, let the Wells Fargo guys show you how they'd do

it and answer any questions along the way.

SMS/SCCM MMC add-on, via Windows services or as a stand-alone

tool. See how creating and deploying script files, special registry files,

BIOS modifications (using the Dell OMCI) and custom HTA popup

messages to users can expand the usefulness of SMS/SCCM. Learn how

MIF/MOF data can be used to trigger special collection changes as well

as the use of special collections and queries to aid in the computer

management process. Learn about what other free tools have been

created for SMS/SCCM to help with the management process.

  • Vista SP1 is now available through Windows Update
    22 April 08 03:43 PM | rodtrent | 13 comment(s)

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. Windows Vista SP1 also addresses some management, deployment, and support challenges.

Windows Vista SP1 is available in English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Other languages will be made available soon.

Microsoft strongly recommends using Windows Update to download and install Windows Vista SP1 on single PCs:

    • The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x86 is 65 MB (compared to 450 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
    • The download size from Windows Update of Windows Vista SP1 for x64 is 125 MB (compared to 745 MB from the Microsoft Download Center).
    • Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.
    • Some Windows Vista users may encounter an issue with a small set of hardware devices that may not function properly after updating a Windows Vista PC to Windows Vista SP1.   This is an issue with the way the device drivers were re-installed during the Windows Vista SP1 update process, not with the drivers themselves—these drivers worked on Windows Vista RTM and they work on Windows Vista SP1.  This problem is typically corrected by simply uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. We are working with the manufacturers of these devices to get the known problematic drivers and their install programs updated, and also on other solutions we can use to ensure a smooth customer experience when updating to Windows Vista SP1 using Windows Update. For new PCs provisioned with Windows Vista SP1, this is not an issue.
    • If you choose to install Windows Vista SP1 via the standalone installer available on the Microsoft Download Center, Microsoft advises that you first visit Windows Update and install all optional drivers. Read Knowledge Base Articles 948187 and 948343 for more information.
    • If you have a prior version of the Windows Vista SP1 beta installed, you must uninstall it prior to installing the final version. Use the Control Panel applet "Programs and Features" and select "View installed updates" from the top left of the task pane. Under Windows, look for "Service Pack for Windows (KB936330).
