Well, I spent about 4 hours total away from my computing life yesterday to install Windows Vista SP1. Guess, what? It didn’t work. I guess I’m one of the unlucky ones.

The upgrade starts from within Windows.

Notice that it tells you that the install might take an hour or more and that the computer will restart several times during installation. This was more like 2 hours for installation on my computer.
After a reboot, the Vista SP1 installation tells me that there are 3 stages to it.

(Since the upgrade was going to take so long, I decided to watch Ghost Rider on my Zune. I was able to finish the movie, btw.)

So, after 3 stages…

…a shutdown…

…and a reboot…

…the Windows Vista SP1 installation tells me that it failed…

And, the “reverting” process takes JUST AS LONG as the installation process (which is why I was able to finish an entire movie).
But, then after the reverting process and a restart of old Windows, Vista SP1 wants to rub my failure in my face:

Fortunately, it gave me a link for troubleshooting my installation failure. Unfortunately, someone has already told me that the steps in the KB article don’t always work, and that Microsoft put these steps up as “logical” ideas on fixing a problem that they haven’t determined what the actual cause is yet.
So…sometime today, I’m going to go through the steps and try the SP1 installation again. Probably later this afternoon, since I have quite a bit of work to do this morning.
