I recently had an issue with Windows Live OneCare, where the product would install, but not allow me to activate it. After several weeks of back and forth emails with the OneCare support folks, I finally hit upon a solution. And, quite honestly, while I appreciate the help the OneCare support folks gave me, it wasn’t anything they suggested that caused me to happen upon this fix.
The web site that Microsoft uses for Activating OneCare has a different domain suffix than the standard Live sites, or even the onecare.live sites. So, even though IE was trusting the Live and OneCare sites, it wasn’t trusting the OneCare activation site.
To fix my issue I had to add the following URL to the list of trusted sites in Internet Explorer:
http://iorigin.onecare.live.com
Once I did this, OneCare activation took about 2 seconds.
