What do you call System Center Configuration Manager 2007?

Yeah — that’s quite a mouthful.  Much more of a mouthful than SMS 2007 would have been.  Yet, per a discussion thread on the SMS email discussion list, what you name a product and how you reference it online is a serious business.

Think about it…if everyone in the world decided to write it multiple ways, how would you find technical articles and documents in an Internet search?  You’d never find them all.

For myITforum.com, I think we should stay away from using SCCM (is that pronounced schism?), or something other thing such as ConMan as someone suggested, but follow the Microsoft guidelines for posting to blogs, writing articles, etc.

So, here’s the Microsoft conventions we should all consider working with:

·         System Center Configuration Manager 2007 (first use)

·         Configuration Manager 2007 or Configuration Manager (subsequent uses)

·         ConfigMgr (abbreviation)

Having seen some of the naming process as it went along, I can tell you it was interesting. Obvsiously "sick'em" or "scum" are not nice associations for a name. They want to have some parity across the System Center brands, so they thought about going with CM (which I would love, given my initials) but that means Operations Manager would be OM, which has spirtual significance to some people. So they decided on ConfigMgr and OpsMgr as the short forms.

For April Fools, I made up this little ditty, to the tune of the Mickey Mouse Club theme song to help people remember:

What’s the product name that we’ve been told by marketing?

C-O-N-F-I-G M-G-R! we sing.

What’s the only short name we should ever be using?

C-O-N-F-I-G M-G-R! we sing.

It’s not “scum” (It’s not SCCM!)

It’s not sick ‘em (It’s not SCCM!)

Forever let us shorten properly!

Hey there, hi there, ho there it’s a trademark thing, it’s true

C-O-N-F-I-G M-G-R! Thank you!

In my post today about what to call ConfigMgr , Cathy Moya (Microsoftie) told an unusual story. Seemingly

Well...  I love the acronym I invented in doco's this week for...  Software Updates Client Agent...  SUCA!

Chuckled all day at the SUCA and SCCM SUCA references...

I guess I could also refer to a ConMan SUCA!

Or in old parlance... a SCUM SUCA!

Keep em coming MS!
