What kind of magazine is WindowsIT Pro?
31 July 07 04:57 PM | rodtrent | 1 comment(s)

I just posted a link to a free online copy of the WindowsIT Pro June 2007 magazine issue.  Then, I noticed that at the top of their browser component there’s a link to Download the sample issue.  Cool!, I thought.

But, when you click Download, it wants to give you a DMG file.  DMG?  That’s a Mac format!  And, it’s a 42.6 MB download!!!!  Sheesh.  Not worth my time.

Here’s what FileInfo.net has to say about the DMG file format:

Category Disk Files
Common? Yes
File Description Mountable disk image file created in Mac OS X; opening the image file will mount a virtual disk on the Desktop; commonly used for software installers downloaded from the Internet.

The DMG format replaces the .IMG file format used in Mac OS Classic and is not compatible with Mac OS 9 and earlier.
Program(s) that open dmg files
Mac OS Mac OS Apple Disk Utility
Windows Windows Acute Systems TransMac
Daemon Tools

So, basically, I can’t read this offline unless I load a stupid 3rd party utility.  And, after looking at the Windows-based offerings, they don’t support Vista.  Thanks, WindowsIT Pro!

MOM 2005 Summary Reporting Pack Guide
31 July 07 02:40 PM | rodtrent | with no comments

The MOM 2005 Summary Reporting Pack (SRP) performs aggregation, or summarization, of the performance counter and alert data in your organization's MOM 2005 Reporting database. The SRP then performs analysis of this summarized data and provides reports that aid in evaluating operational trends in your organization's IT infrastructure.

The SRP provides generic performance counter and alert data reports and several management pack specific reports. The time needed to run these reports increases minimally even as the MOM Reporting database increases significantly in size.

Remember the SMS Alliance (which we were a part of promoting)?  Word is that a new System Center Alliance is in the works and due for unveiling at IT Forum later this year.  More details should start filtering out between now and then.
