Cleaning up my Sent Items folder

How long do you keep messages in your Sent Items folder in MS Outlook?  I’ve kept mine too long.  They are archiving anyway so I’m doing some clean-up today.

I deleted close to 6,000 messages and Outlook has gone unresponsive on me.  It’s been sitting there thinking for a little over 5 minutes now.  This is one of those times when you feel like getting Task Manager to kill Outlook, but I’ll wait to see how long it actually takes.

UPDATE: It took about 10 minutes for Outlook to figure out what it was doing.  Now, I have to delete the emails from Sent Items from the Deleted Items folder.  That took a little less than 2 minutes.

I wonder if there’s a command in MS Outlook, like in Windows, where you can skip moving items to the Deleted Items folder and just have MS Outlook go ahead and remove them.

Deleting the Sent Items, took my PST down to around 159MB.  After using the Compact feature of MS Outlook, the PST is now at 160MB.  What?  Compacting made the PST larger???

BTW: Compacting took about 20 minutes.

Press Shift + Delete to permanently delete a message. Otherwise, the message will be moved to your "Deleted Items" folder.
