Microsoft needs your help: Will your SMS 2003 site database upgrade successfully to Configuration Manager 2007?

Published 08 February 07 12:08 PM | rodtrent

Find out for sure and possibly win free Microsoft software!  There will be random prize drawings from the first 50 submissions.  Special prizes will be awarded for the most interesting failed upgrades!

What do I need to do?

  • Backup your SMS 2003 SP2 production database (no test site db's please) and restore it to a SQL server in your test/lab environment.
  • Make sure you disable replication on the database if it is a replication source.
  • Go to http://connect.microsoft.com. Look under available programs for the program “TestDB Upgrade – Configuration Manager 2007 Beta 2”.  Apply for the program, complete the additional instructions and you will be taken to the homepage for this program.
  • Click on the Downloads link on the left hand side of the Configuration Manager TestDBUpgrade program page. Locate and download the TestDBupgrade.zip package.
  • Extract the contents of TestDBUpgrade.zip to a local drive on the test SQL Server.
  • Run setup /testdbupgrade <database_name> against the database.  If you need details on this process, additional instructions are included on Microsoft Connect in an article titled “How to Test the Site Database Upgrade Process”.
  • When completed, capture the ConfigMgrSetup.log.  Note that setup does not post any message when finished, it just exits quietly.
  • Submit the ConfigMgrSetup.log file as your entry to the drawing by entering Feedback on Microsoft Connect - one per DB.:

1.    Click the Feedback link from the menu on the left side of the page. You will be taken to a home page for feedback.

2.    Click the green submit feedback button on the upper right.

3.    Choose the TestDBUpgrade Results form from the list of Feedback Forms.

4.    Enter a title for your feedback (e.g.:  Testdbupgrade Passed, or Testdbupgrade Failed)

5.    Provide a brief description of your testdbupgrade experience: Did you encounter any errors or did it complete with no errors?

6.    Click Submit. You will then be taken to a feedback item page for your feedback.

7.    Important: Click attach files and follow the instructions provided to attach your ConfigMgrSetup.log.

Important other information, Disclaimers and Regulations:

  • Submissions from February 8 to March 5 are eligible for prizes.
  • Winners will be notified by March 19, 2007
  • Actual processing and shipping of prizes may take 6 – 8 weeks after the contest period closes.
  • Test of Lab deployments/databases are disqualified, production deployments only.
  • ‘Failures’ are qualified by the product team to rule out operator error and invalid submissions.
  • Software prizes cannot be shipped outside the U.S.A. due to export licensing regulations.
  • The product group may ask for additional information for any upgrade that encounters an error.
Good Luck!
