Wow -- lots of negative feedback on the Symantec acquisition of Altiris

Published 29 January 07 11:27 AM | rodtrent

From what I’m seeing in the communities, Altiris could have done a lot better than being acquired by Symantec.  The reactions range from:  “Run away” to “ruined” to “once they get their hands on it…”

If it were up to the public, this deal would not go through.  Some Altiris customers may flee just because Symantec bought them (i.e., Symantec’s name in the industry is mud right now).  Will Symantec turn a good application into a has-been?  Only time will tell.  If Symantec does do the right thing with Altiris, based on the community buzz, the industry will definitely be surprised.

It’s definitely sad.  The old “Computing Edge” company is now just a memory.  Those were good times.

I still have my light-blue SAM doll. I guess we'll be seeing a yellow one now?

Any thoughts on why the Symantec name is mud? Trusting in the statement that they will operate as a separate business unit with the same management may keep things status quo, at least for the short term.

hehe...I have the SAM doll still, too!

I'm not completely sure of all the reasons, but it seems in the different communities, not a lot of folks have good things to say about Symantec.  This has been growing over the last couple years.  Failed and/or corrupted updates, separating customer levels, making the product hard to use/manage...those are things I've heard.
