The sad story of my Creative Zen Portable Media Center

My Creative Zen Portable Media Center (PMC).  I love this thing.  It stores music, pictures, slideshows, movies, television shows, etc.  To be honest, I really do love this thing, yet I haven’t used it for the last 6 months or so.  I got it out again the other day to dust if off and reorganize the content on their, getting ready for the trip to MMS 2007.

When I tried turning it on, there was no power.  So, I thought the battery had simply run out of charge.  For some reason, instead of just hooking it up to power to charge it, I tried opening the battery compartment.  It’s a good thing I did.  The battery compartment was tough to open.  So, I spent another 5 minutes getting the battery compartment to open up.  The battery compartment cover tabs that hold it locked in place broke in the process.  Dang, I thought, I’d have to order a new battery compartment cover.  But, that was just the beginning.  Instead of just sliding off, the battery compartement cover “popped off”.  Why?  Well, because the battery itself had expanded beyond the size of the small compartment.  It exploded!  Not the kind of explosion you’d see on Myth Busters, but it exploded nonetheless.  Here’s a couple pictures of it:

Notice the black plastic on the top and bottom of the battery.  Those two black pieces are supposed to be flat against each other.  The battery part, the two gray pieces, are what exploded.  The following picture shows the small compartment this battery is “supposed” to fit inside (along with the compartment cover that broke in the process):

So, now I have to find a way to order both the compartment cover AND a new battery, AND try to get them here before I leave for MMS 2007.  Good luck, I guess.

Good luck getting a replacement battery and parts. I had the same problem(well the battery didn't break apart, but looked mighty pregnant) and it is a known problem with Creative, that the batteries "expand" after being stored in the unit for a long time or contiuously charged.

At the time this happened to me, Creative no longer had them in stock, but I was able to find a third party source.

Replacement batteries can now be purchased directly from Creative here for $24 (much cheaper than what they were going for when they first came out):

I don't know about the battery cover at least it isn't "needed" to run. If needed you could tape the cover on with double sided sticky tape or velcro. You may also need to perform a reset by pressing the reset button in the battery bay.

I had the same thing happen last year and Creative replaced it when I told them it was a "known defect".

Now I have a second problem.  The same thing happened to the replacement unit - completely damaged the motherboard too.

There is absolutely no way that my unit was "overcharged".  This is a serious defect in the Creative product and they could be looking at a class action suit if they can't get it resolved.  As for the battery expanding when it is left "inside the unit" for a long period of time - this is a portable media product.  Why would we ever take the batteries out?

How many other people out there have a $600 paperweight?
