The latest Adobe patch: Adobe relies on you, the customer, to get it right
I’ve always hated Adobe. Well, maybe ‘hate’ is a strong word, but I do feel strongly that Adobe is a horrible software company. They don’t listen to customers and they don’t take the time to care what kind of trash they release on the public. Here’s one recent example that I’m sure you’ll agree with:
=============
From the Patchmanagement.org email discussion list (great list by the way — you should sign-up):
“Adobe has released a security bulletin and 'patch' for the recent vulnerability identified in Adobe Reader\Acrobat.
http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb06-20.html
Unfortunately, Adobe dropped the ball on this one and didn't create an official 'patch'. Instead, they have made available an updated dll file and instruct users to stop Adobe, locate and delete the old dll, and copy in the new dll.
Gee, that makes it easy for enterprise deployment...
As an Adobe customer, I would expect more out of Adobe than a set of manual instructions for updating my applications.
All of us should keep applying pressure on Adobe to do the right thing and release a true patch for this issue - follow the lead of other vendors who make it (somewhat) easier to update their applications for security flaws.”
