Basketball season has officially started...
I love this time of year. I’m back to coaching basketball, and my oldest son is back to playing.
Folks email from time-to-time about my oldest’s goings-on in the world of sports. If you remember from last year, he came close to breaking a couple Ohio records in track until he was injured and had to sit out the rest of the season.
Alex played extremely well during the basketball season opener last night, scoring 11 points, causing multiple turnovers for the other team, and he had 3 massive blocks. He still hasn’t had a breakaway yet so he can show his dunking skills, but I’m sure that’ll come soon. He plays again tonight, but right after his game I have to head out to coach my seasoner opener for the local 6th grade boys team.
My team had a Thanksgiving tourney last weekend where we won 1 game and lost 2. The 2 we lost were against some massive teams. For example, (remember this is 6th grade we’re talking about) one of the players for one of the other teams was over 6 ft. and had a pretty healthy beard for his age. But, hey — it’s a tournament. Tournaments to me are simply practice — both for the players and the coach. The losses gave me some insight into exactly what kind of team we’ll have this year (i.e., a running team or a team that needs to run set plays) and gave me a week to adjust what we’ll be doing for the rest of the season.
I’ll also be coaching a 3rd grade boys team this year at the local sports complex for the Jr. NBA. My youngest son, Eric, will be playing on that team. If you remember, I coached his soccer team this past soccer season. I remember when I was young thinking how cool it must be to have your Dad as your coach as I watched Kyle Macy play for the UK Wildcats. His Dad was his coach in high school. So far, Eric thinks it’s cool to have his Dad as coach. I hope it stays that way.
