Do this if you have MP errors after installing SMS 2003 SP2:

1)     Remove MP/RP/SLP from SMS

2)  Delete all previously created SMS objects from AD Systems Management folder

2)     Remove IIS, BITS, etc.

3)     Reboot

4)     Install IIS, BITS, etc.

5)     Reboot

6)     Ensure that WebDAV & ASP is ALLOWED by clicking on the Web Service Extensions and
looking in the right hand pane

7)  Added MP/RP/SLP roles to SMS

8)  Wait until roles show up in AD Systems Management folder

9)  Configured DCOM Permissions to RP/SLP objects

10)  Reboot

11) Verify all status is OK.

MOM list Q&A
17 February 06 08:28 AM | rodtrent | with no comments

Rod Kruetzfeld asked:

I am being asked to describe the retry process that MOM uses when sending email alert notifications.

The concern is that the 15-30 second window that it takes an exchange cluster to fail over that the email alert may be lost during that time.

I know - use a dial out modem & send those to a pager.  This will drive that requirement depending on the SMTP answer.”

The answer from Microsoft:

For MOM 2005, it does not appear to be any specific retry logic.   That said, MOM 2005 can be configured to use NLB Windows cluster to send the messages through and that load balanced cluster can forward to Exchange cluster. That will be very reliable setup.

Looking forward to MOMv3 we do not retry SMTP messages out of MOM, but we allow “backup” SMTP servers to be specified.”

From Microsoft:

As the SMSv4 is closing in on the beta 1 release, we're looking for some folks to help us run a couple of SMSv4 database upgrade tests.  For the first 50 people to send in their test results in the next week, we'll give you a Microsoft System Center jacket.  The instructions for running the tests are here:

1.. Go to http://connect.microsoft.com.  Note that Microsoft Passport is required.  If this is the first time you've used Microsoft Connect, you'll need to register as well.
2.. Once at the Microsoft Connect welcome screen, choose the Invitations link item from the list on the left hand side of the page.
3.. Enter the code below and follow the directions provided.  This will register and allow you access to the SMS Connect site where you can download the files.

4.. After this you should be in the SMS Connect Site.
5.. There is an announcement with instructions on how to proceed, including a link to download the necessary files.

TechNet Webcast: Troubleshooting Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) (Level 300)

March 08, 2006, 9:30AM-10:30AM

Alain Lissoir, Program Manager, Microsoft Corporation

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) is a pervasive component of Microsoft Windows that is often useful in critical situations. Many enterprise management applications rely on WMI, so it is important that administrators know how to troubleshoot it properly. In this webcast, we examine the WMI architecture and look closely at how it works. We cover common situations you are likely to encounter with WMI and explain how to fix specific issues without compromising the stability of the applications that rely upon it. We also demonstrate how the new WMIDiag tool can assist you in identifying potential issues and make recommendations on how to fix them.

Of course, you have to be in the server room at the time this goes off, but it’s kinda neat:
