Either news orgs are clueless as to what systems management really is, or the vendors or application management systems are. I've seen this a few thousand times in my life, where vendors tout systems management, but they are really only application management vendors. Here's an example:

So, how do you kill a company? You go in the exact opposite direction of the industry. John Gormly has given some excellent coverage on the Novell situation recently (http://www.myitforum.com/blog/jgormly/archive/2004/12/31/1142.aspx).
It really makes me shake my head when I see a company like Novell try to compete by making all the wrong choices. You never hear it or see it, but I get the feeling there's a Scott McNealy type of person at Novell. You know the type -- self-degrading, full of hate, and self-centered on one goal -- defeating Microsoft.
Sorry, folks. Microsoft's demise will come from the inside, not from another company or a "movement". Mac folks know this too well. If you want to compete with Microsoft -- do what they do. Find ways of building on Microsoft software. Altiris (or should I say, Computing Edge) knew how to do this a long while ago, but then strayed from the path.
Coincidence? There's a lot of ex-Novell employees that work at Altiris.

Due to the last holy-heck snow storm in my area, the wife and I have finally decided that a Snow Blower is in order. After consulting with my fellow blogger, John Gormly (http://www.myitforum.com/blog/jgormly/), this is what I'll be purchasing just inside the new year:

The Christmas holiday was awesome this year in our little circle. We always try to make the holiday special for our 3 kids, and so far I believe we've done the parently duty and provided a special time for them.
This year we finally had a white Christmas. With 22 inches of snow in our area, it was a white, white, white, white Christmas. Snow is great. I was excited as it started snowing. I was excited as it continued snowing. I was excited as it continued snowing hard for close to 15 hours. And, when it was done snowing -- I was still excited. That was until I realized that some of the kids' Christmas presents were still en route and the weather would probably keep them from arriving.
So, being the good father I set out on a snow shoveling war to make sure that the various shippers could have free reign into our home. Even after all the hard work I put forth, only one (1) shipper made the grade.
We didn't see DHL or FedEX until 3 days after Christmas, but our UPS man made great strides in building our confidence in UPS. Our UPS man braved the deep snow to bring our Christmas presents to our door. I felt sorry for him so I met him halfway to grab the boxes from his grasp. I apologized for him having to brave the elements, but he simply smiled and said, "No problem!"
It was a Festivus Miracle!

I've heard about this issue a lot in the management communities, so I thought I'd share what came across my web browser this morning.

As I think about how quickly 2004 slipped through our grasp, I know 2005 will sift through just as quickly. We all look to the turn of a new year and hope for resolutions to make ourselves better. But, we all know that resolutions are broken (for the most part) within the first 60 days of the year. So, let's not look to burden ourselves with something that puts a "sting" in our personality, but, instead, let's move toward making the next year more of the same good things we saw in 2004. Even if you thought 2004 was a horrible year, there were some good times, and those are the things we need to strive for in 2005.
More good times. More rights than wrongs. More love than hate. More of what makes us believe that the world wouldn't be better without us. And, knowing many of you as I do, I know the world simply wouldn't rotate in the same way if 2005 weren't a year of community. I think of the recent Tsunami disaster, and the loss of life that has surmounted any disaster in our history and I'm completely overwhelmed and humbled. Just when you think life can't get any worse -- look over the fence. Somewhere there's a greener pasture with a Century 21 sign in the yard.
myITforum.com has become a staple in my life. Not the web site, mind you, but the many, MANY people that make this community my home and my life. As long as I live, I'll always be proud to call every member of this community my friend.
Thanks, folks!
Happy New Year!
P.S. Hope to see you at MMS 2005!

OK...that's a bit over the top, I admit. But, Email and blog Spam have to stop. How do we do it? Will US laws stop Spammers? Don't make me laugh.
No, what really needs to happen is for the public to take back their email and Internet systems. Someone, somewhere knows a Spammer, hacker wannabe, virus writer, etc. Someone, somewhere knows it's wrong, what their co-worker, friend, or relative is doing. A better future for all of us is waiting if we can just coax the friend, co-worker, or relative into blowing the whistle. Spammers and hackers like to beat their chest in triumph -- it's part of their profile. They need applause. They need the limelight even though they sit in dimly-lit basements, out of the way of peering eyes.
Cash is the answer -- not laws. Offer cash for information leading to the location of these miscreants. Microsoft has the right answer to this. Once the cash has been dispensed and the felon in our grasps -- then the law can take over. I'd go as far as to hope for a law that lands the felons in Guantanmo Bay.
