Today's Report from the WPC   Day 3 – WPC Final Day Well, as we complete a very busy Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference the 10,000 delegates are beginning to show the impact of walking miles of convention floors and late nights on the town … including your humble reporter. WPC is a very different conference than what many of us experienced at the Microsoft Management Summit in that the focus is on business issues as opposed to technology. However, I wanted to move from event reporting to an observation on bridging the gap between the Microsoft Partner and Technology communities.  Per Werngren, the President of the International Association of the Certified Partners (www.iamcp.org) and also CEO Sweden based IDE (www.idenent.com) offered his thoughts. Since I am not the best note taker, I will paraphrase Per’s comments: “The traditional roles of the partner and technical community are different. The basic role of the IAMCP is to encourage business growth among partners, whereas technical community is about training, certification and making things work. However, we do have common goals. At IAMCP we help partners make the connections necessary to make sure growth is achieved and projects go forward.  By stimulating the amount of Microsoft related work available the IAMCP makes it possible for the technical community to put their skills, training and certifications to rapid use. IAMCP is particularly interested in helping partners with staffing of qualified members of the technology community. We provide additional resources and connectivity. I believe we that the gap between business issues and technology issues will to continue to come closer. We at IAMCP look forward to working with other communities.” In the time I have spent with Per in preparation for WPC I am convinced that IAMCP is committed to the technology community through its partner member support. On the Enterprise Management side, our friendly Microsoft program manager Vlad Joanovic confirmed to me last night about the increased partner interest in the System Center product line … especial SCOM and the forthcoming remote interface. It is clear that many of the delegates have more on their mind than networking and technology … but for now I will report on scheduled events. Part of any major Microsoft event is party time. Last night was regional party night and U.S. partners were treated to a concert and food/drink at Denver’s Mile High Stadium (Go, Broncos!!!). The first part was held in the private sky club section followed by on-the-field concert by Huey Lewis and the News until a summer lighting storm cut short the fun. Needless to say, a lot of us are still dragging this morning. Tonight will be tamer with an exhibitor party, but tomorrow we end with a Coors Field (Go, Rockies) send-off.  Today’s keynotes are again available for download at http://members.microsoft.com/partner/digitalwpc/ . Most of these keynotes centered on the Dynamics product line. Interestingly, about half of the exhibitors at the show were also Dynamics vendors. Among the keynoters, I found the presentation by Sanjay Parthasarathy of interest in relation to platform interrelations and new tools. If you are involved in development, there may be some items of interest for you to screen.  The Enterprise Management/System Center activity was found within Microsoft’s booth. However, according to Program Manager Ben Srour the interest among partners appears to be strong and growing. There have been a couple of related break-out sessions including one scheduled from Thursday afternoon (that will also be streamed and archived for your convenient viewing).   I am heading back to the Exhibition Hall to see if I missed anything of special note to report.  Tomorrow I will be taking a little different approach by interviewing executives at the International Association of Microsoft Certified Partners (IAMCP.org) . I am writing this during the noon hour but can report on the keynotes.  One of the themes of the conference is greater attention to community. This extends well beyond partners working together, but also partners reaching out and utilizing the talents of the technology community. Of course, this is a very good thing.  From my perspective the most interesting session today was provided by Microsoft COO Kevin Turner. His discussion clearly outlined the company's product and service plans for 2008 and beyond. I would encourage myITforum.com members to stream his presentation. The heavy emphasis on the forthcoming server software product lines together with software as a service (SaaS) will have an impact on the way many of us in the Microsoft management arena conduct business. I would be very interested to know what impression you have regarding this direction. Kevin's presentation is available at http://members.microsoft.com/partner/digitalwpc/.  Steve Ballmer's presentation can also be streamed at the same link. Steve was his usual high energy self. While a number cool technologies were shown, Ballmer again placed a very heavy emphasis on SaaS. This seemed to raise many questions. Tim Krueger and Jacob Eker of PEI (www.pei.com) seemed pleased with the spotlight being placed on managed services. However, they are eager to get more clarity on how these plans are implemented and how companies such as PEI will be able build and expand their practices within this new framework. Object Restore for Active Directory is unsupported freeware. Exchange Server Offline Folder Wizard 7/6/2007 To find out which mailboxes store their offline data in OST files and which do not, system administrators can use the Offline Folder Wizard. The wizard analyzes the mailboxes of the selected servers and provides three lists: one containing the Distinguished Names of the mailboxes storing their offline data in the OST files, a second containing the Distinguished Names of the mailboxes not storing their offline data in the OST files, and a third containing a list of the errors that occurred when the wizard attempted to logon to mailboxes. The wizard can analyze both Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000/2003 servers. Networking Reporter Express 7/6/2007 Reporter Express is a tried-and-true solution that lets network administrators on Windows 2003, Windows 2000 and NT quickly assess and run only user based reports.
