9-11. Five Years After
Where were you when you first heard about the events of September 11, 2001? Were you glued to the television screen like I was?
I was glued to the television screen in a small hotel restaurant in Berlin, Germany. I was just coming down from my hotel room to give a presentation on SMS Installer and noticed a whole horde of people who were attending the conference crowded into the small restaurant, peering at the television screen. So, I stopped to take a look before heading into the conference room. I was immediately transfixed.
Like most, I first thought this was a horrible accident. Then, the second plane hit the second tower, showing that this was an act of terrorism and murder. I had to go. My SMS Installer session was starting. I hustled through the presentation so I could rush back to the television screen to see what had transpired during the hour I was speaking.
The days and nights following the incident, I still sat transfixed to the television screen in my hotel room. I was supposed to leave for home the day after my presentation, and then head on to Australia to give another presentation in a few days, but due to the updated security measures I was stranded in Berlin.
A week later I was headed home after riding the German rails to Frankfurt. Frankfurt was the only city that had flights back to the United States.
5 years later, I still cannot forget all the events of that day, and the weeks, months, and years that followed. Just like I was transfixed to the television screen, my mind still sees the events just as clearly. Let's take a moment today to remember those lost in the 9-11 tragedy, and have faith that the events following that tragic day will lead us to a better world.
