Today's Fun Link Community Notes Calling for SMS Alliance Downloads We’ve added some new options to the Upload section of the site where you can upload documents, articles, whitepapers, etc. for any of the SMS Alliance members: 1E, Intrinsic, PS’Soft, Macrovision, iAnywhere, Vintela, or just the SMS Alliance, in general. Logged into the site, go here: http://www.myitforum.com/downloads/upload.asp Upload your file, give it a name, and choose one of the SMS Alliance companies from the list of categories (they are toward the bottom of the list). New Discussion List Server Stats This is pretty cool and thought I'd share with all of you. The new list server software allows me to review stats for the day (the old software did not). The software pumped out 22,782 messages yesterday for a total of 347MB of data. Pretty good! Now, we just need to get all of you hammering the lists so we can get a real perspective on how well the new software will hold up. Go ahead -- ask your hardest topic questions. Today's Fun Link Community Notes A tip for the new email discussion lists After sending out the email alert this weekend, when the new myITforum.com email lists were created (you can read that alert here, if you missed it), a lot of folks started filtering into the membership of the lists. But, as is always the case when you make a migration like this, some are having a bit of trouble. The one thing I'm seeing is that folks are not using the correct email address for list commands. OK, if you read back through the instructions (you can find them here) there is one key element of subscribing, unsubscribing, setting digest mode, etc. that you need to adhere to or your command will not work. You MUST use the command@lists.myITforum.com email address for any list command you want to utilize. Here's what I'm sending folks who are having trouble. It's a quick and dirty method for getting subscribed to the list of your choice: 1. Create a new email. 2. Address it to: command@lists.myITforum.com 3. Enter the following in the BODY of the message, leaving the Subject line blank: Subscribe <listname> Example: Subscribe mssms 4. Send the email. That's it. Another NOTE: There is no need to set the flag in your email software to request Read Receipts for an email discussion list. This only serves to increase the message flow to the list, so please turn this feature off for the myITforum.com discussion lists. We have successfully moved our lists to our new hosting company and off the ListLeague servers. Create a new email. In the TO: line of the email, input the following email address: command@lists.myitforum.com Now, in the BODY of the email (NOT the subject line), type the following command: Subscribe "listname" Important NOTE: The "listname" value is actually the List Name in the previous section of this email alert. For example if you wanted to subscribe to the Microsoft Systems Management Server list, you would type the following into the BODY of the email: Subscribe mssms See I told you the earlier information would be important. Send the email. Once the myITforum.com list server receives your email, it will respond with a reply email telling you that you have successfully subscribed, and give you a list of additional email commands you can use to manage your list subscription. Back to top Other ways to manage your list subscription Here are the other list commands that are available to you, so that you can effectively manage your list subscription. Help - Replies to the email with basic instructions on using List Serv Commands. Help "listname" - Replies to the email with the contents of the Help E-Mail for that list. List - Replies to the email with a list of all available lists. Subscribe "listname" - Adds your email address to the subscribers list of the mailing list. Unsubscribe "listname" - Removes your email address from the subscribers list for the mailing list. Set mode digest "listname" - Sets your email address to receive emails in digest mode, which will send all messages for the list combined into one email at regular intervals. Set mode standard "listname" - Sets your email address to receive emails in standard mode (the default), which will send messages one at a time to your email account. Back to top More to come... This is just the start of the migration of the myITforum.com email discussion lists. We now have the ability to continue to grow the lists without the fear of bringing down the server! Eventually, we will have a nice graphic form on the myITforum.com web site, where you can subscribe and unsubcribe from there, instead of using email commands. But, this is a good solution in the interim to get you folks back up and running on the lists. Some of you may have noticed that the myITforum.com email discussion lists are not working today. We have had to do some emergency upgrades on the lists, and they will be functioning again in the next day or so. Unfortunately, this will result in you folks needing to sign-up again for the lists you were participating in and monitoring. I'll send another note out as soon as the upgrade is complete. There will be a pleasant change in how you sign-up for the lists, as well as how to review the archives. I'll explain all of that later, so stay tuned. ALSO, we will be upgrading the forum software this weekend, as well. The upgrade should be completed before the long weekend is up and most of you have to go back to work. What do you think? It's working pretty well and the newsletter was delivered successfully last night to all recipients. I wanted to drop you a couple notes before you delve too deeply into the rest of the newsletter content. First, I don't know how many of you are familiar with the new PowerShell scripting tool from Microsoft, but, Windows PowerShell is a new command-line shell and task-based scripting technology that provides comprehensive control and automation of system administration tasks. Chatting with the folks from Microsoft at MMS, they want us to put together a comprehensive forum and download section for Administrator scripts. Basically, Microsoft is relying on us to make this tool popular. It's a powerful scripting tool, much like VB Script is/was. Right now, you can find the web-based PowerShell forum here: http://www.myitforum.com/forums/tt.asp?appid=33 If you want to learn more about PowerShell, visit the Microsoft web site: www.microsoft.com/powershell If there is the need, we may even start a new email discussion list for this tool. Stay tuned. Secondly, I want to thank SMS Expert and Microsoft for hosting the myITforum party at MMS 2006. This is the second year in a row where SMS Expert and Microsoft have hosted this party for the community, and from what I understand, folks were walking over each other to try and get a ticket to attend. It was a blast seeing everyone in one place. And, the Mariachi band was excellent (except for the drunk singer that wasn't even attending MMS). Look at the picture links at the bottom of this section. There are quite a few myITforum party pics.
