From Rod Trent's Web blog: Someone asked today what my drive is for the community. They asked why I still sit here and help people get jobs, personally help folks with questions and problems, and why I just don't go work for some huge corporation. It's because of all of you, frankly. This community is the best community in the world -- and I truly believe that. If I jumped-ship and went to one of those huge corporations, I'd lose a lot of friendships that I've garnered over the years, and the friendships of those I don't even know yet. I had a friend of mine recently show me a non-compete employment agreement that was absolutely ludicrous. It stated that he basically could not do his job anywhere in the world for 2 years post employment and any idea he thought of within 7 years of termination belonged to his current employer. To top it off, the agreement also stated that by signing this he acknowledges that this agreement will not hurt his future chances of employment and he waves the right to a jury trial. I don't know about you but that just makes my skin crawl and my blood start to boil. First, let me state that I am a little biased here. I am the victim (and I don't use that word lightly) of two non-compete disputes. Both times I was forced to either pay or give up over $10,000 in revenue. That said, I cannot totally be objective here. Still, the idea of an employment agreement limiting a person's ability to either advance in her/her career or keep that person from working is just flat out unethical. As a business owner, I can understand how a company would want to protect themselves. I totally agree with intellectual property agreements on work performed for the benefit of the company during working hours or if the employee is working on a work related project off hours that should belong to the company as well. I also believe that a company should protect their assets including financial data and customer lists from disgruntled employees. That is where the employment agreement should end from the employees' part, in my opinion. Anything stricter should come with quite a few extra perks such as stock or partial employee ownership. A company should not expect an employee to give up any chance of career advancement outside of their current employer if they have absolutely no control or say in how the company that they work for operates or compensates them. I also feel that work or projects done on personal time should belong to the person doing the work and not that person's employer as long as it does not overlap with the employer's core business model. If an employee wants to spend his/her own time developing an application for sale, consulting for a couple of Mom and Pop organizations, writing a book or article, or creating a new technical based web site, then that work should belong to that employee. The employer should have no rights to try to claim ownership of that material. Think I'm being crazy and that this never happens? Well let me give you a couple of examples of people I know. I will leave the names and companies out but you should be able to get the idea: A consultant that I worked with wrote a very popular technical book during his own time after hours and on the weekend using his own computer equipment. His consulting company claimed that his knowledge was obtained on the job and threatened to sue for the profits. Another consultant put together one of the most popular Web sites on the web for Microsoft support content during his own time and also was threatened by his employer to give the site over to them. Two employees left an organization to start an unrelated business and were sued for making contact with a former customer regarding a product that their previous employer had no intent on ever selling. This list could go on and on. Companies today say that my generation has no loyalty to their employers. How can we when stuff like this is becoming more of the norm than the exception? When are companies going to learn that if they want loyalty then they have to treat their employees with the TRUST and RESPECT that their employees deserve? When employees feel that they are valued and can provide helpful insights into their organizations and are compensated accordingly, they will remain loyal and the company overall will thrive. Web blog: For those of you who haven't already deployed Windows Media Player 10, you may be interested in the new Enterprise Deployment Pack (EDP) for Windows Media Player 10 available at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/enterprise/deploypack.aspx. Some background information: The EDP is a command-line tool that presents the network administrator with a series of Yes/No questions. When the questions have been answered, the EDP creates a Microsoft Installer (MSI) package that can be deployed throughout the organization. At its most basic level, the EDP: * Generates an MSI package. The MSI file wraps Windows Media Player and runs it in redistribution mode. This facilitates deployments that require an MSI package or installation of Windows Media Player by users of managed desktops. * Creates a "silent install" that links Windows Media Player Setup and additional Windows Media Language Packs or hot fixes. Windows Media Player Setup will run in redistribution mode, which means that there is no user interface or requirement for interaction with setup prompts. The end user will not be prompted with End User Licensing Agreements (EULAs) or configuration options during setup. Through the EDP, network administrators and IT pros can: * Set local group policy (group policy for Windows Media Player can also be set at the domain level by companies running Active Directory). * Preset Windows Media Player preferences. * Add one or more skin files to the installation. A custom skin can limit access to consumer features that are not suitable for enterprise usage. * Include Windows Media Player Language Packs with the deployment. * Deploy the customized MSI file through Active Directory or through any software management system. While the EDP itself is in English, any localized version of Windows Media Player can be included in the MSI file. To date, I can't find a SINGLE hardware provider that has this config! Why??!! You're probably asking, "Why do you need THAT much RAM?" Well, when doing presentations on technologies (i.e. MOM 2005 or SMS 2003) I bring up a fairly robust virtual environment (2 DCs, 2 SQL boxes, a few XP machines, etc.) to show the technology end to end. Just for the record, I traded e-mails with Brian and we spoke on the phone even before writing the blog posting. With that being said? I understand and can appreciate Brian's position on training being available for free. I must say publicly, I do not agree. (Did you really expect anything else? Geez!) Allow me to elaborate, if I may. First and foremost, I'm assuming we all work for a living. No one works for free, right? So, why is this any different? The concept of providing structured learning rather than a hodge-podge of related topics was always a driving factor for the sites. They, currently, loosely resemble what an SMS or MOM course would cover in a classroom hands on lab scenario. Sometime in the near future, there will hopefully be a closer and a tighter integration with Microsoft's classroom offerings. Additionally, LearnSMS.com / LearnMOM.com provide a Corporate Learning Solution for larger teams which support these products. This solution can be customized to an organization's support and learning needs. As my sites evolve, so will the learning availability. For example, I posted out there quite some time ago about doing "click through" learning. I'm coming back to that concept again as well as supplementing Microsoft official coursework. As the old saying goes, "If imitation is a form of flattery?" Well, I'm unbelievably flattered! :-) Fujitsu Tablet PC From Tim Mintner's Web blog: I just finished testing Fujitsu's new slate Tablet PC. I never thought I would be a fan of the slate model Tablet PCs but after using this model for a week I highly recommend it. My client is intending to use this model for ER doctors as they go from patient to patient but I really saw a lot of value for regular office workers who are trying to go paperless. The screen is very bright and the viewing angle is almost a perfect 180 degrees. The buttons are easy to use and very intuitive. This model sports a Super 802.11g wireless network card, two USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port, and an external monitor connector. This model also has a built in fingerprint reader to ease authentication burdens. There is also a very awesome docking station for this model which would be a requirement for most office workers. The speed of this model was extremely impressive. The whole computer weighs in at about 3.5 pounds. The feature that impressed me the most was the over 8 hours of battery life! I know that they only advertise 6 hours but I saw first hand that if you just use the tablet for surfing and simple text entry that it lasted over 8 hours. I hate having to plug in my laptop all of the time so this is a huge feature for me. If you are looking for a tablet PC, I would recommend checking this model out. BTW did I mention 8+ hours of battery life! It seems as though Microsoft continually fails when it comes to their community space. Approximately every 18 months or so they are re-inventing their involvement and never really planting a firm foot. The Hive looks to have more potential as there are "Sponsors" listed, but none of them jump out as truly viable sponsors. Considering how good Microsoft tends to be with marketing and how much cash they should have, it amazes me how poorly they handle the community space. Almost as though they toss a few dollars in that direction so they can say they have a community space, but do not really do anything with the community space. I have spoke with many Microsoft employees over the years that appear dedicated and passionate about working with the general user community, but it appears this is not a unified feeling or one that is held at up levels of the company. It will be interesting to see how long before The Hive is yet another, forgotten cog in the wheel. I have always been one who likes to dig and figure something out on my own. That being said, I also know that I need resources to help me along. So, do I take a class for a fee or browse the net and see what I can find on my own? Well, I have been to tons of classes because I used to work for a company that gives training. Most classes just don't give the depth and have the experience of real world enterprise application. When I look to the community for answers, I am surrounded by real world solutions and great resources from people who have been there before. These days, I don't think I will ever take another class again. Online training should be free and available to everyone who wants it. If you can't find a resource for free these days, you?re just not looking hard enough. The first was in my Ask the Experts discussion, the "Expert" recommended I check out the site. The second was during Chris Rees' presentation on "Extending SMS 2003 with the SDK." During this, Chris recommended checking out the Code Repository on myITforum. Always nice to see credit given where credit is due and in this case it is the hard work of a lot of people that make myITforum the useful tool that it is. WSUS/ITMU -- What's it all about!? From the 1E Web blog: OK here's a quick overview of ITMU -- or the Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates to give it its full name. This is the SMS version of WSUS and it's another step towards simplified patch management. It's still in Beta so things can change, but here's a quick overview of what it's supposed to deliver. * Separate install -- just like the other scan tools * Uses the Windows Update Agent to install Patches. You can distribute this via SMS (included with the install) * Uses the Windows Update Catalog * You need Windows Installer 3.0 (or 3.1) to install office patches. * You need some hotfixes -- some client, some server (extra status messages etc.) * It fills in the command line for you when you create MU packages.
