Subject: [msmom] RE: Agent not discovering roles

Roles are populated via discoveries.  When discoveries fail – there are events on the agent log, and the management server log.  I don’t recall ever seeing that not  be the case.

The config service has to process all this – so if you have a sick config service, you can also get unreliable results.  However – a sick config service is always shown in the RMS event log.

I’d venture you have a semi-broken OpsMgr environment, and not able to insert discovery data.  If you look on your management servers, I’d bet you have 2115 bind events in the OpsMgr event logs.  This can be caused by MANY reasons… so let’s start there.

Rebooting and reinstalling agents won’t do ANYTHING…. All that does is resubmit the discovery data… and therefore you might get lucky and make the insert in the DB on that try.  You could accomplish the same thing by just bouncing the HealthService on an agent – all discoveries run on HealthService startup (or shortly after) unless they are configured with a specific synch time.

Subject: [msmom] Agent not discovering roles

Hello,

Got an annoying one, some of my agent’s aren’t picking up some of the roles that are defined, for example some of my Hyper-V servers will not pick up the Hyper-V role and get the associated rules/monitors.  There doesn’t seem to be an consistency on this as all of the machines are configured the same and on the same network.  The only fix I have found is to uninstall the agent reboot the box and reinstall the agent, and that only works 50% of the time.  While this is sometimes possible recently I have some Exchange Servers that are new and they are not picking up the mailbox role…  Don’t really want to reboot them (though they get the cluster server role which really confuses me.)  Anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks,
