Subject: [msmom] scom requirements
i'm planning to test and hopefully implement scom and i'd like to start off with the latest and greatest. my plan is to have scom 2007 r2 running on windows 2008 r2 and using sql server 2008 where appropriate. so with that in mind, i have several questions:
- does scom 2007 r2 have sp1 builtin?
[KH] OpsMgr R2 has all the components of OpsMgr SP1, plus updates, fixes, and new features.
- will all scom roles work on windows 2008 r2?
[KH] There is no support statement on this yet - wait until 90 days post RTM for this. We might require hotfixes, etc. At this time - 2008 R2 is unsupported.
- will the relevent db roles function correctly on sql server 2008, or will i need to stick with 2005?
[KH] SQL 2008 is FULL supported for OpsMgr R2.
- do all scom roles handle 64bit platforms fine?
[KH] Not only does OpsMgr run fine on x64 - we strongly recommend it for OpsMgr server roles.
- finally, our test environment only has 32bit hardware so i will be installing windows 2008 sp2. is this close enough to windows 2008 r2 that i could expect no oddities to appear using windows 2008 r2 in production?
[KH] No. From an OpsMgr perspective - the two platforms should be very similar. However - I would absolutely expect that there will be subtle issues on a new OS that released after the OpsMgr product was developed, and we would likely require updates to OpsMgr to fully support this new OS.
