Pretty sure you need SA to take advantage of R2.

Does anyone know the ins and outs of MS licensing voodoo to state whether or not we will have to re-purchase our Enterprise Server Management CALs if we want to upgrade to R2?
Or would we be able to upgrade our underlying SCOM infrastructure to R2 and technically only be in licensing violation if we upgrade any of the clients?
We purchased SCOM license and CALs in December of 2007 (without SA unfortunately…).

Yes – he meant July 1st for GA.
Because this is not a service pack – there is no “upgrade only” version that could easily be made into a web download…. Like a service pack would. This is a new version of the product, that has upgrade capability with the previous version, but has licensing implications. Therefore – it will only be available for widespread release on the July 1 GA date.
