I have to say, Rod's post does a great job dissecting the fallacy of the latest Apple commercial that basically says that the Mac doesn't get viruses. They do and will continue to exist, probably in increasing numbers, so it alarmed me that Apple would go that far in a commercial.
I also believe that Vista will help even more with the virus problem in the PC world. As a company, we've has had much better success with XP than with Win 2000 and I have no doubt that Vista will be ever better.
On the presentation of the commercial, the PCs are for successful people thing certainly is one way to spin it. The other is that young and cool personifies the Mac and an nerd in a suit personifies the PC. The guy wasn't a geek, he was a nerd. Revenge of the Nerds nerdy.
I never got the impression that the Mac guy, who is Justin Long by the way, was so poor that he gave up his next hundred meals to buy the Mac or anything. Maybe he bought a Mac Mini to replace his PC. Some people don't keep a well maintained baby face like us, Rod. I do have the messy hair though.
It is quite interesting how celebrities seem to come out in small herds to advertise their Macs. There is rarely an Apple commercial that doesn't have a celebrity appearing in or voicing the ad. Where are the Microsoft celebrity fanboys?
If you haven't seen the commercials, here is the wikipedia entry for the ad campaign and the Apple site to watch the ads.
Rod Trent at myITforum.com : Have you seen the new line of Mac commercials?:
It’s pretty funny, actually. Apple does a great job with their marketing. It’s the string of commercials where the geek dressed in a business suit with glasses says, “Hi, I’m a PC”, and the unshaven guy with messed hair and barely enough money for a T-shirt and jeans, says, “Hi, I’m a Mac.”
