Rob, you are absolutely right. My family and I have discussed this for hours at this point. This has been the slowest rescue operation that I have ever seen. My first thought is that there are probably hundreds of people who have died, or will die, because no one came to get them. Where was the military response to this? Why hasn't the federal government taken this more seriously?
On another note, I know the people of New Orleans are hurt, scared, and lost. They've lost everything the own and people that they loved. Why are so many people hindering the rescue effort? The search and rescue teams had to stop yesterday for fear of their lives. How many people did the thugs kill by driving the rescue teams away? Every hour means more and more people will die.
My heart goes out to everyone affected by the hurricane. I am truly sorry for your losses. The nation needs to pull together and reach out to all of those in need.
I don't watch the telly much, nor do I read many papers but I caught the 10PM BBC News yesterday evening and again I felt overwhelmed by this disaster.
I hate feeling helpless, but I sat there in my front room in London watching people being interviewed. Women where weeping and children where crying, and strangers just walked past. What is that about? How can someone not stop what they are doing and help? Why are people wandering around on their own and not forming up in to search and rescue parties? The lady said that gangs are going around stealing, and raping women and children. When I heard this it felt like someone took a knife to my soul and rendered me open. I had to switch off in the end as it left me in a real dark mood. This has to stop, now, by protecting the people and not the goods in the city.
