Voice over IP or (VOIP)?
Has anyone tried this out yet? Time Warner keeps calling me asking if I want to switch my phone service over to cable. I keep reading about companies forming ventures to do the same (Texas Intruments and AT&T just announced one). Speaking of Texas Instruments, wow...remember them? That name brings back a lot of memories.
Anyway, all this VOIP stuff has got me thinking. I already wonder which admins at Roadrunner may occassionally “easvesdrop” on email that sits on their server (that's why I check the box that asks to delete mail on the server after downloading). Now I'm beginning to wonder, suppose I switch my phone service to VOIP? Who will have the capability of picking the signal off of the wire and listening to the conversations? I can't believe that someone doesn't already have one, or someone won't pack one that picks the voice packets off the wire and eavesdrops. Will some bored adminstrator at the cable company decide listening in might give them something to do?
The reason I ask this is I have yet to read in ANY article on VOIP anything about encryption. Is there such a company out there? If so, why haven't they advertised? I sure haven't seen them. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
