A real improvement of Essentials 2007 SP1 is to the Computer and Device Management Wizard with the ability to now support discovering SNMPv1 devices.

The discovery process configures the Essentials 2007 Server as a proxy agent for any SNMP-enabled network devices you discover, and subsequently do the device polling via SNMP GETs.

If you have upgraded your existing installation of Essentials 2007, you will want to re-run the Computer and Device Management Wizard to be sure you can now manage your SNMPv1 devices.

First, run the Computer and Device Management Wizard, selecting Advanced Discovery from the dropdown, select Network Devices and then Next. Enter a network address or a range of addresses. If you’ve used a adjacent range of addresses for your network devices and a common SNMP community string, you can discover your devices in a single pass.

When you’ve completed entering the advanced discovery parameters, click Discover. Give the discovery process a few minutes to locate all the devices. When complete, you will see the discovered network devices in the Network Device State View in the Monitoring workspace.

If you are not successful discovering your target network device, confirm your device supports either SNMPv2c or SNMPv1.

To view your currently managed devices:

In the Essentials 2007 console, click Administration.
Expand Administration and Device Management in the Administration navigation pane.
Select Network Devices.
All discovered network devices are displayed in the Views
