No, Essentials 2007 is not a lite version of System Center Operations manager (SCOM.)  Lately, it feels like I've been answering that question frequently.

Essentials 2007 uses the same basic engine as SCOM, but includes the features of WSUS 3.0. Unlike WSUS 3.0 on it's own, Essentials 2007 also provides support for pushing out and managing software updates for non-Microsoft products. Essentials 2007 is for organizations having 500 or fewer clients, and 30 or fewer servers.

Kerrie Meyler, who writes for Networkworld, wrote an article on Essentials 2007 in October of last year. She recently posted a great article on this very subject with a table breaking out the features between SCE 2007, SCOM and SCCM.
