Hack and Defend
Thursday, March 18, 2010 9:24 AM

MS Canada is bring back their “Hack and Defend” workshops!

It’s back!  Last years popular Hack and Defend workshops are back!  Step inside the mind of a hacker at Microsoft’s Hack and Defend Workshop. Discover the tactics used to penetrate your PC, become aware of the most threatening viruses online, and most importantly, learn how to help protect yourself.

Hands-on presentations by industry-leading professionals and Microsoft experts in security will demonstrate the most current hacking methods and propose practical ways to help protect yourself.  I won’t be able to attend this year as I’ll be on the road with EnergizeIT but if you are near I strongly urge you to attend.  This was a great workshop last year

Samsung “Galaxy” aka GT-I7500L
Monday, March 15, 2010 5:25 PM

Well, I purchase an Samsung Galaxy (GT-I7500L) on Friday. Over the weekend I played with it, setting it up and download the desktop sync software (dated Mar 10 2010!), etc. I ran into some issues with the software and the phone.

Today I went back to the Bell store where I purchased this phone. To talk about issues I’m having with it. Although the store staff was helpful their hand are tied as to what they can do. So I got home and called Samsung Canada. I finally got to their mobile device support person. She started with a ton of irrelevant questions. I finally cut her off an said this is my problem.

My problem is that “Samsung New PC Studio” does not work with Windows 7.

She tells me that “She is sorry about that but Samsung will be coming out with a new version in the next year to solve that.”

I say "In the next year! What should I do until it come out?”

<silent>

I ask “Will be finally support x64 bit OS?”

Paraphrasing her, “Basically, she doubts it!”

Ask to talk to a supervisors and I was told that they will not talk to me because it was a software issue.

Again paraphrasing her, “Basically, I can do is wait and maybe if I’m lucky will Bell / Samsung do something to fix this.”

So I ask you “the community”, Is it realist that a manufacture in this day and age, to still not support 64bit OS? Windows XP x64 came out 8+ years ago (Oct 21 2001)!

Windows 7 was released on July 22, 2009, should it take them this long to support it too?

I truly want to hear your feedback on this! am I being unrealistic to think that both Windows 7 and x64 bit OS should be supported?

Also what I want to know is, when will MS start “putting the screws” to companies that don’t support x64 OS? It is nuts that x64 OS are not supported.

BTW, I’m looking up the tech support number for Blackberry now, if they support Windows 7 on a x64bit OS, this Samsung is going back!

March 25 User Group Event – Windows 7 Deployment Deep Dive Take 2
Sunday, March 14, 2010 3:29 PM

This event was incredibly popular last time and many could not make it either because the registration filled up or the storm so Pierre Roman has offered to run the event one more time!

Topic: Deployment Deep Dive on Windows 7 Community Tour-Ottawa Take 2

Description:

Are you running Windows XP?  Are you feeling the pressure of creating a deployment plan? Have no fear!  Leveraging learning’s from two Windows 7 early adopters this session will give you the skills you need to proceed with your own deployment.  The session will focus on free Windows 7 deployment planning and deployment tools that customize operating system packages and automate deployment planning and network deployments seamlessly. We will dive right into:

  • How to use the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) tool to identify your current hardware and application inventory.
  • How to use the Windows Automated Install Kit (WAIK) to build a customized image for your organization.
  • How to use the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) to build, deploy and maintain Windows installation images.
  • How to migrate the end users profile from their current installation to the Windows 7 installation using the User State Migration Toolkit (USMT).
  • How to integrate MDT and Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to perform Lite Touch installations of Windows 7.

Finally we will look at how we can leverage the various tools to solve any application compatibility issues you might encounter.  We will look at how you can overcome common obstacles using the Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT), or larger obstacles using Windows XP Mode and Microsoft Enterprise Desktop Virtualization (MED-V) and even how you can leverage Application Virtualization (App-V) to streamline application deployment and ensure all your applications work!
