The SMS Client Health Monitoring tool which was originally available as an add-on tool for Microsoft SMS 2003 Service Pack (SP) 1 is a great tool for locating SMS clients that are healthy and is particularly good for locating those resources that are experiencing issues related to SMS inventory and the like.
The tool can be installed on an SMS 2003 site that has at least SP1. This simply means that if you have a later SP installed it will still function in SMS 2003 as expected. SMS SP 1 introduced several new and several improved capabilities for SMS 2003 and subsequent SP’s bare built on that base. ConfigMgr 2007 is a different version of SMS however it is still basically built on the improvements that were incorporated in SMS 2003 by the SP’s.
The underlying key here is the SQL database backend in conjunction with the SMS 2003 and ConfigMgr 2007 services and client applications. Many of the SMS 2003 SQL tables are still available in ConfigMgr 2007 as well as the services and client applications that are needed for the tool to function.
With this in mind after verifying that the necessary support files are still available in ConfigMgr 2007 I installed and configured the tool on a ConfigMgr 2007 site and set it up as outlined in my previous posts on the subject. The tool seems to function as expected and so far I have seen no issues with it. Until a new and hopefully improved version of the add-on tool is released from Microsoft I will continue to use the tool on my ConfigMgr 2007 site and will update this post if any issues are encountered.
If you decide to do the same please don’t hesitate to post your comments or even your suggestions to this post.
