Creating A Custom MMC Snap-in For The ConfigMgr 2007 Console

Here you will find the steps necessary to create a custom MMC snap-in for adding one or more ConfigMgr 2007 consoles to use on your workstation or site server.

Follow the steps below to create a custom MMC for the OpsMgr 2007 Web Console

1. From the run command enter the following: Mmc /A to start the MMC in author mode

2. Once the MMC is open from the menu bar select “File” and then select “Add/Remove Snap-In”

3. From the bottom of the screen select “Add..” and then from the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box scroll down and select “System Center Configuration Manager” and then select “Add”

4. At this point the Database Connection Wizard dialog box appears at the Welcome screen select “Next”

5. From the Database Connection Wizard screen the Locate Site Database task is started where you can select either of the options below:

Reconnect to the site database for the flowing server

If you are using this option keep the Site Server name or use the drop down arrow to select a Site server to add.

Connect to the site database for the following site server

If you are using this option enter the site server name or select the “Browse” button to search for the server to add.

Note: This list contains all of the Severs in your infrastructure not just the servers running ConfigMgr.

6. Next select either of the options to “Load all console tree items (typical)” or “Select console tree items to be loaded (custom)” and select “Next” to continue.

Note: If you are using the “Custom” option the Console Tree Items wizard appears where you can select or deselect any of the following Items:

Site Management

Computer Management

System Status

Security Rights

Tools

7. Next the Summary information is displayed for you to review and correct if needed by selecting the “<Previous” button if needed otherwise select “Finish” to compete the Database Connection Wizard and you will be returned to the Add Standalone Snap-in dialog box and then select “Close”. Then at the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box select “OK” when you are done and test the connection to ensure that it functions as expected.

8. Finally from the menu bar select “File” and then select “Save As” and change the “File name:” as needed as well as the “Save in:” as needed and then select “Save” and the select “File” and then “Exit”.

You can also add the following to your custom console if needed as well:

Application

Snap-In Name

Resource Explorer

ConfigMgr Resource Explorer

Web Reports

Link To Web Address

Remote Desktop

Remote Desktops

SQL Server

Microsoft SQL server

Note: In SQL server 2005 the MMC was replaced by the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) where the old Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer are combined into one however the SQL Server Configuration Manager is still exposed and available to the MMC.
