The term The Family circle not to be confused with the “Family Circle” magazine of the 1940’s can be traced back to the age of the medieval Normans of France. It was said that they brought fire inside the domicile in the 9th century and that is where the term has its most common origin.
Supposedly when the French winter evenings grew cold the family would huddle around the hearth in a circle or usually a semi-circle because of the placement of the hearth against a wall in the evening. There they would talk and pass the time before bed in their family circle when the sun went down and they could not do things outside.
