The SMS Recovery Expert made it debut a few years back as a webpage based tool hosted on the Microsoft SMS webpage and with the release of SMS 2003 it was included in the installation CD-ROM media. When the CD’s autorun begins it is presented as an option for installation.
The importance of the original web release as well as the SMS product version is that it allows you to recover an SMS site or sites by answering simple questions about your current installation and configuration. The tool will then guide you through the recovery process based upon the information that you have provided about your failures and in turn provides you with a task list of step by step instructions on how to recover your site(s).
The Recovery Expert Web Site can be installed on your primary site server or another windows server with IIS 5.0 or greater installed. Follow the steps below to install the Recovery Expert Web Site on a server with IIS installed.
1. Insert the SMS 2003 CD-ROM Installation media into the server you want to install the Recovery Expert on and if autorun is disabled from the CD media double click Autorun.exe.
2. From the Systems Management Server 2003 Setup dialog box select the option “Recovery Expert” to install it.
3. Follow the online installation instructions and when the installation has completed you will be presented with the Recovery Experts URL link.
4. Save this link for future reference as a favorite or as the default web page on the Recovery Expert server.
Note: You may need to change your IIS configuration to allow for Active Server Pages (ASP) by following the instructions here:
