June 2007 - Posts
I just finished another SMUG meeting for the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania government agencies.
I won't be posting it because it was mostly internal information in the presentation and the rest was a MOM 2005 Demo. If you are a Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania agency and you missed the presentation, I have uploaded it to the SMUG Portal.
I wanted to thank everyone that assisted me over the last month in learning MOM 2005.
OK my brain is tired.
Time to take a few days off and enjoy camping with my son and his Cub Scout den.
Then it's back to the grind as I teach myself SCOM 2007 and come up with a timeline for SCCM 2007.
As Carl from Jimmy Neutron would say: (my son's favorite cartoon, I like it too its funny)
Stop the world I want to get off!!
Just got this from my TAM, looks like someone is trying to get to people though a SPOOF.

Hi everyone,
We are getting reports that some customers are receiving e-mails that look like Microsoft Security Bulletin updates, but which is actually fake and contain a link to dangerous executable.
The title of the reported e-mail is "Microsoft Security Bulletin MS07-0065 - Critical Update"; however, this is a very common problem and so I'd like to take this opportunity to send out a reminder about how to identify and protect from fraudulent e-mails.
There are some very common ways to detect if a mail is from Microsoft or fake, for example:
- Hovering over the link to see if it is indeed a Microsoft site or just a phishing attempt
- Spelling errors or poor grammar are usually an indication that the mail is not real
- Link to executable or attachments (Microsoft does not send attachments or links directly to an executable in our security updates).
For a more comprehensive guidance on this, please see the following Microsoft web pages:

Contrary to what our wives and mothers say we are not addicted to game playing we just like it.
"There is nothing here to suggest that this is a complex physiological disease state akin to alcoholism or other substance abuse disorders, and it doesn't get to have the word addiction attached to it," said Dr. Stuart Gitlow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

"The more time kids spend on video games, the less time they will have socializing, the less time they will have with their families, the less time they will have exercising," Kraus said.
Apparently this guy never played WOW hehe.
I was asked by management to see if MOM could manage the network(switches routers etc) so i asked the guys on the MOM email list.
The responded with this:
We may be able to use MOM 2005 to monitor switches and routers provided that they can pass SNMP traffic to a specific server.
There are management packs we could purchase (this looks really cool)

or we could try to do it our selves.

Well it looks like i missed a few KB articles for installing MOM 2005 with SQL 2005. One of which has a resolution to the problem i was having yesterday.

I was trying to get MOM 2005 reporting to install on our new MOM 2005 server and could not get past the Pre-Requisites. I installed SQL 2005 SP2 and the MOM Reporting server was freaking out. I tried every MS article I could find to get this stupid thing to install.

NONE of the articles helped.
I finally tried something crazy and it worked. I unchecked the "Automatically Detect Virtual Directories" and just typed them in and the install passed the pre-requisite.
